Beer choices

Anna, on April 27, 2017 at 5:17 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 14

We are having a full open bar and get to choose 3 bottled beers to be served at the reception, as well as wine and mixed drinks. Both FH and I like good IPAs, as do many in his his family and mine. I realize that not everyone will drink craft beer or in particular IPAs. Do we have to provide a lite beer that neither one of us would drink unless we are stranded on a desert island and that was the only thing available to drink?

I have no problem with providing a more standard option for people who are not beer snobs, such as a Sam Adams, but if I would prefer not to use one of my choices on a lite beer.

ETA-spelling. A dessert island would definitely need more drinks.

I think you need a lite beer in the mix. Some people watch their cals and prefer the lite in that situation.

Maybe UO: But I don't think you have to provide a light beer choice. We did 5 craft beer selections and no light beer choices because...

    1) If I go to wedding, I usually don't care as much about calories as I normally would, so I would think most people would want to splurge on non-light beers for a special occasion.

    2) Craft beer is quality beer, so why should I serve something that's sub-par?

Again, I'm a fellow beer snob so this is probably a UO. Lol.

I'm also a beer snob, so I also vote for more craft options! I would just make sure that your craft options are varied in style. For example 1 IPA, 1 lager or pilsner, and 1 amber, stout, or porter

I love beer! But I'm the anti-snob I'll drink a bud light or PBR any day. But there's only a few IPA's that I like. I think one lite/lower quality option wouldn't be a bad idea.

I think it depends on your crowd. FH and I love craft beer, but most of our friends and family and simple and enjoy an ice cold Coors Lite. So if most of your friends and family are craft beer drinkers, then craft beer should be fine.

We are trying to fit all of our guests tastes. Spacedust IPA, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Bud light, and Angry Orchard is what we have chosen for beer/cider options. It's really a "know your crowd" type of thing.

Definitely depends on what your guests typically like to drink. I don't think we will have much for craft beer because I'm from the land of Ol' Mil, Coors, and PBR. It is your wedding and you can choose what you like. The venue I am thinking about allows us to bring in booze but there is also a bar right next to it (they are both run by the American Legion) and people can go there if they don't want what we provide.

MMB, it's FH favorite as well as a top choice for many of our guests. It was hands down the first decision FH made about the wedding.

I'm tempted to just have the craft. 3 beers is just not enough to give up another choice that I'll drink. I just had a friend tell me about Spacedust! Now I have to try that one. It's definitely been fun auditioning beers for the wedding. We live in upstate NY and I may try to stay local. I had an otter creek free flow that is very good and a little lower in alcohol than our favorite Ithaca flower power.

    Thanks for the thoughts all!

What about a pilsner that isn't like Coors Light, etc.?

We're doing Boneyard RPM IPA, Pfriem pilsner and the third is to be decided, but I'm pushing for another IPA in the land of craft beers over here.

I totally get where you are coming from as we prefer craft beers too. My FH's family drinks a lot of bud/bud light though so we will be providing Budweiser as an option. We will also be doing one IPA and probably an amber ale or pale ale from a local brewery.

Hmm I'm going to put this thought in my notes about drinks thanks! I'm not a beer drinker anymore and prefer cocktails and since you have the open bar I'd be happy. But there may be some that'll want the lite. But I honestly feel like you're doing more than enough already. Good luck with the beer choices!
