Beer and wine or soju bar??

Allyson , on January 20, 2018 at 1:09 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 9
So we're getting married at a vineyard, and they do not have a full hard liquor license-- beer and wine only. BUT, they do have an option for a soju bar. Soju, the only way I had previously experienced it, is like a Korean version of vodka, but watered down. The venue explained it to me similarly, that basically it's vodka with half of the alcohol content removed so that it falls under the beer and wine license limits. The venue has not only vodka 'flavor' but all the other basics like rum, whiskey, and tequila. This option is only $5 more per person. Personally I feel like that's a weird thing to have to explain to guests when they ask what whiskey soju is, and my guests may be put off by it or feel like we're being cheap or something. Basically my question here is would you be put off by that at a wedding? Or would you just be thankful to not be limited to beer and wine only? (I should note my FILs are Russian Armenian and live on vodka). Thanks for the long read guys!!

The alcohol content varies widely from 16% to 53%. Soju is great as a base for cocktails, and can be mixed with beer. Since I enjoy soju I wouldn't be bothered by this, but I don't know how popular it is in America.

I would just offer beer and wine and not have to deal with explaining the soju.

I would include the soju and maybe have a little notecard near the bar explaining what it is.

I would include the soju. Personally for me im not a huge beer or wine drinker so having the option to have something else i would love even if it is a little different

The cost is relatively affordable so I’d probably go with it. Maybe some sort of card to explain it like PP suggested?

At $5 why not, if it fits your budget. Throw up some bar signage and you are all set.

I've been to a restaurant where all the cocktails were made with soju. Think traditional cocktails...bloody marys, moijitos, etc. Can't tell the difference. I don't think your guests will care. Maybe just decide on a premade cocktail list for them to help order drinks. I will say...soju always give me a nasty hangover and gets you drink fast! It's dangerous!

If I were attending a wedding at a winery, I'd be focused on having the wine. I think beer and wine would be perfect.

I'd only consider the soju if I knew I had guests coming that always seem to pick liquor over beer or wine.
