Becoming an officiant in California?

Justin, on September 19, 2015 at 1:07 PM Posted in Planning 0 6

I've looked on the internet and read up on the laws in the state and it seems pretty simple to do in California. It also seems really easy to get ordained online. Has anyone done this? Are there any free, legitimate non-denominational websites someone can recommend? Thanks in advance!

Hi @Justin - Are you trying to become ordained? Or are you helping someone get ordained to perform your wedding?

I'm not familiar with CA laws - I'd suggest calling to make sure whatever you decide to do is legal in your state. Don't forget that it's the only part of your wedding that you NEED, and that MUST be legal - so please be thorough and careful when doing this!

    Thanks for responding Christina.

Both, actually lol. I am officiating my best friend's wedding and later that year my father may be officiating mine. Thanks for the advice!

I don't know all the details but my uncle is officiating my wedding in Los Angeles. First I had to have my marriage license and then he could apply for his 1-day license. He had to fill out forms and go somewhere, i think the court house but not sure and show them my license, there is a fee and he had to take a 1 hour class where they tell you all of the legal things that need to be said during the ceremony and they teach them how to fill out the license correctly. I don't know about an online only option, this is just what my uncle had to do in order to officiate for us.

My dad got licenced for a one time ceremony for my brothers non traditional ceremony (quick backyard thing, no fuss or mess), then got licenced for anything and everything in CA when my sister had a super small living room deal. I'm planning on having him officiate at my traditional shindig. He's non denominational. I'm not sure what site he used. I'll ask and get back to you.
