Beauty Test Run Fails 💅😎

So I'm not at all a girly girl and never go for spa days etc. I thought I'd try something different for the wedding (part 2 since we got married in a small ceremony last summer) and do some trials ahead of time to see if I liked it.

I've seen my cousin's ombre dip nails and thought they were really pretty and could be good for the wedding. So I did some research about the process and thought I'd try them out. I found a place with good reviews, specially about dip nails so I thought it would be great- nope! I don't know anything about manicures but I was pretty sure it wasn't right. First of all she filed over my natural nails with one of those drills. And then dipped them directly into the base coat or whatever. I knew this was unsanitary from what I had read but I was already there with raw filed nails and didn't know what to do! The whole place didn't seem very sanitary to me once I was looking around.... Also I specifically looked up a place with SNS because I heard that was the best but she ended up using a bunch of random products. The nails turned out looking nice but I'm so skeeved out and anxious that I'm going to get some infection. Not to mention I'm worried what my poor nails will look like once it's removed. They'll probably be wrecked for the actual wedding in six weeks. They were so healthy and long 😞
And that's not all! I got a spray tan today. Again, did research and found a place with good reviews specially about the tans. The lady ended up having some guy in the salon for another appointment and I'm behind this crappy screen with gaps in it, basically naked haha. I told her it was my first spray tan but she gave me no information and asked no questions about how dark I wanted it etc. She did it so quickly and gave me no prep, shower cap or anything at all. Looking at my body I could hardly see a difference but once I got home and looked in the mirror my face is sooo dark, especially compared to my neck and chest (the exact opposite of what I would prefer). I know it's temporary so oh well!
Anyways, glad I did these as trials instead of right before the wedding for the first time! This is why I don't "pamper" myself. Any advice or similar experiences welcome 😂

I’m sorry that didn’t go well, but better now than for the wedding. That is how dip manicures work, I know it seems odd. The chemicals in the dip act as antibacterial (somehow, idk science) so it actually is perfectly sanitary. As much as sharing nail polish would be. But it does come on pretty thick, id recommend a no chip manicure for the wedding and skip the spray tan! Or try another place, I’m in a big city so I found a great place with lots of info but depends where you are.

That is standard for a dip manicure. Also, it is normal for a spray tan to initially start looking dark between the time it is done and the time you are allowed to shower afterwards.

Ok thank you for the reassurance! I will definitely look into a different type of manicure and probably forget the spray tan.

Thank you for the reassurance! The spray tan is way less jarring after I rinsed but it's definitely uneven! My one arm is pretty tan and the other looks like she totally missed it 😂 I should probably try another place or just skip it altogether.

How did you prep for the spray tan? This can make a big difference in how it turns out.

I find the best, cheapest, easiest way to prep for a spray tan is 5 days before the tan (tan on the 6th day), pour a warm bath with baking soda. Soak for 15-20 minutes, then take more baking soda, make a paste (just a little bit of water) and gently rub it in little circles all over yourself. Rinse off really well, then MOISTURIZE THE HECK! out of yourself. You can do this every other day before the tan (so three times). The night before the tan, exfoliate and lightly moisturize before bed. Then, the day of the tan, no products whatsoever - no lotion, no deodorant, no moisturizer or sunscreen on your face, nada. Don't shower that morning, either.

A lot of products that exfoliate have oils and fragrances and things that can interfere with spray tans. This is why I just stick to baking soda. I get spray tans twice a month, and I've never had one turn out wonky.

Also, if you use a retinol or retinoid on your face, you should nix it a week before.

That said, if she didn't even put a shower cap on you, it sounds like she was in a hurry... so I would still go elsewhere.

Thanks for all the advice! A lot of that is news to me. But I did do all the prep according to what I found online and on her site. Exfoliated thoroughly 48 hours before, shaved 24 hours before and moisturized a lot leading up to it and then showered the night before with natural soap and didn't apply anything after. She was totally in a rush which sucks cause I might have liked it if she did it more evenly. But at this point I don't think I'll bother trying it again, even somewhere else. I feel like my face looks like Donald Trump and the rest of me is pale/tan 😂

Ask around too, chances are there are people you know who have great recommendations on who to go to in your area, that's how I found almost all of my "pamper" places after moving across the country.

Please whatever you do, DO NOT rip off your nails! This is what causes damage. In order to remove them, you need to gently file the top layer and soak in 100% acetone for 15min (timing varies depending on thickness - this is a good place to start). This turns it all goopy and you just scrape it off with a stick, and repeat the soaking however many times necessary. Takes awhile especially on yourself, but it will be worth it especially if you like your natural nails! If you want something similar though, a gel manicure will suffice for the day and still look fancy and hold up better than normal polish - and no risk of smudges! Take off the same way but it takes less time

Thank you! I did hear that picking them off was the worst thing you could do so I will definitely not do that! I'm dreading the removal though! I'm also just worried what my nails will look like underneath since she used the drill on them. Do you think they'll be all rough and thin and dull? And I'll definitely look into the gel instead, thank you!

I'm sorry this is going to be long, I'm a nail tech in training so just bear with me!

Removal just takes time and can be a little awkward doing it yourself, just make sure it's 100% acetone (anything diluted won't be strong enough to break down the powder), and use a good thick hydrating lotion afterwardsSmiley smile Don't be surprised if it takes an hour or so, it is very time consuming on yourself and can be frustrating, but so very worth it! (Also, peeling nails off hurts like a MOTHER FFF so just don't! lol) The drilling actually doesn't do as much damage as people think/say, all that comes from ripping nails off; drilling just opens the nails and lets the product stick to nails better - which is why it hurts and is hard to rip them off.

As far as your nail health afterwards, they'll probably be a little thin and rough, but nothing to be concerned about. I couldn't say too much about the roughness, since I always put on new product right away, and roughness can come from picking, not soaking! So as long as you do that it should be good, but I'd expect it to go away in a few days if they are rough. However for thinning, I'd recommend getting some Orly Tough Cookie (or any other nail strengthener, that's just my favorite) and applying a layer or two every day/every few days, this is my favorite nail strengthener and a life saver after getting nails done! And I've never heard of a dullness problem, so I can't give too much advice on that!

Hope this isn't too overwhelming Smiley smile

That's very helpful, thank you so much! They just looked dull after she drilled them but hopefully that was just from the nail "dust" haha I'm glad to get advice from a professional 😁

Yea my whole thing is don't start "experimenting" with new things for the wedding unless you are still 3-6 months out. A new skincare routine can wreck your skin, spray tans can go wrong, etc.

Do I follow my own advice? Of course not. Smiley xd

I was experimenting with some skincare stuff up until a week or so ago and was finally like "just go back to what you know" because my skin was reacting in wildly unpredictable ways (I also have my period so hope some of the breakouts are just hormonal and will subside in a few days). I also haven't quite figured out how to adjust my skin/hair products seasonally yet, so whenever there's a big shift in temperature and humidity I feel like a wreck for at least a few weeks while I adjust. At this point I'm
just 9 days out so have to convince myself to leave my blemishes alone, stop putting random products in my hair, etc. I bought some press on nails but never tried them, so I'm going to just paint them (because I've at least done that before) and hope it goes well! I'm terrified of putting the nails on and having them pop off cause I did it wrong, or not liking it and trying to remove them and damaging my nails. I also have boob tape and have yet to try actually taping my boobs the way they need to be taped for my dress (I did at least do a "patch test" so I know I won't have a reaction to the adhesive). I had these plans of trying out all these things prior to my wedding but we hardly ever go out (thanks Covid) so doing a full face of makeup just to do some selfies in my house seemed pointless. It will be what it will be at this point!

Haha that's a good attitude! I feel the same way at this point. We're technically already married so this is less pressure I feel like. I thought 6 weeks was ok to experiment but probably not the wisest choice haha! I've also been breaking out with those horrible painful pimples that leave hyperpigmentation (at 31, never had issues like this before). I think it's from getting sweaty with a mask on at physical therapy 😖 I was going to try some new skin products but I think you're right that I shouldn't be experimenting either. I think you'll be all good. It sounds like you've tested the most important stuff so far so just try not to second guess yourself!
