Beach Wedding with Bridesmaid on Crutches. Help!!!!

Erin, on September 15, 2015 at 11:30 AM Posted in Planning 0 4

My sister and maid of honor broke her ankle and will be on crutches for the wedding. It is NOT a short walk in the sand to the ceremony site, so we need help figuring out how to get her there.

Gold carts are not allowed in the sand on this beach. We know a "beach wheelchair" is an option, but are there any other options out there? Any ideas are appreciated! Wedding is in Pensacola, FL.

I don't know how well these do in sand, but maybe look into one of these "scooters" ?

ETA: I think they can be rented or purchased from medial supply stores... or you may be able to find them online as well.

A couple strong groomsmen? Not really a long term solution, but maybe it could at least get her to the ceremony site.

Those small wheels won't work in the sand. The beach wheelchairs have balloon tires and are you best bet. Here at the county beaches you can reserve the wheelchairs in advance. Otherwise you can rent them from places that rent all kinds of beach "stuff."

Second the beach wheelchair. I broke my foot last Sept and was non-weight-bearing until February. Any of the crutches alternatives aren't going to work on the beach because the sand is so uneven. It's not even a distance issue-- the uneven surface is more of a concern.

That being said-- if she'll be on crutches for any length of time, suggest the hands-free knee crutch. It's the same idea as the scooter, but you can go up and down stairs (facing backwards going down). I used it for the 5+ months I couldn't walk, and I was much more independent. (Remember, on crutches, you can't even carry your own cup of coffee.) It works out to be cheaper than renting the scooter. My PT is actually much easier because my quad muscle didn't atrophy.
