beach wedding and heels

Laura, on April 17, 2013 at 10:00 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 22

So FH and his GM are all about a foot taller then me and my BM. Our ceremony is on the beach and I'm trying to find a way to wear heels. I really really want heels so I was thinking maybe wedges for the ceremony and change into heels after or maybe some sort of solid runner for the aisle. Have any other brides pulled this off?

    I think an aisle runner would be difficult on the beach. I would definitely go with wedges if you're set on wearing heels. Why not wear sandals or nothing at all during your ceremony and change into heels for pictures/reception?

    I'm sorry, but unless you want a broken ankle, heels and beach are two words that do not go together, lol. I'd rather be short then face first in the sand, lol.

    If you are determined to wear heels, I would suggest LOTS and LOTS of practice walking in the sand with heels, lol.

    I must say, I think this is a very bad idea. Like Valerie said if you are set on it please lots of practice.

    Definitely wedges or thick/high flip flops. I wore low wedges & walked easily on the beach for my wedding. I agree a boardwal/runner for the aisle might be too complicated and wouldn't look natural. Good luck!

    OK so run-off question. If I do go barefoot but then want to wear heels how would I hem my dress? It has no train

    @Mrs.D,

    Although barefoot seems like a good idea, remember the sand will get hot. It's not like walking on the beach you'll be standing over it constantly. I would highly recommend against it. You don't want to be uncomfortable during the ceremony.

    Given the name of my biz, you'd assume I go barefoot all the time. But, I'm a tenderfoot, LOL. For my beach weddings, I wear "honeymoon flip-flops" that leave an impression in the sand "Just" and "Married" -- but they do flip sand up behind me, especially if I'm walking fast.

    If you wear shoes with a fabric covered heel, it will get ruined -- as if you rubbed it with sandpaper. Same with a train on your gown.

    Payless actually has some nice bridal flip flops that are platformed. I would go with something like these so they don't dig into the sand. I think even with an aisle runner, it could be a bad idea to wear heels.

    Id wear wedges, remember flip flops will kick up the sand all over you and that's not fun. I wouldn't recommend an aisle runner because it will sink into the sand and get covered in sand. It wont look good as soon as someone steps on it. As far as wearing heels in general, I probably wouldn't. I recommend going barefoot. You may not want to be shorter but its the only way to ensure you don't fall.

    Could you do platform flip-flops? That way, you still have a good surface area to stand on, but it would give you some height?

    If you pick barefoot, and switch to heels later, no matter what you do, at one point your dress would be too long or too short. So I suggest finding platforms around the same height as the heels you plan to wear later. You don't want to be tripping over your gown barefoot....

    You probably shouldn't get more than 3 inch heels so its still manageable to walk in when you are barefoot.

    You can always wear beach wedding sandals (bottomless) for the ceremony and then change into heels for your reception - that way you will be comfortable on the beach. Flip flops make noise when you walk and they throw you off-balance - the only way to be comfortable, yet be accessorized, is to wear barefoot type sandals. They can be made in any color with crystals or pearls with a beautiful medallion and your attendants can wear sandals to match their dresses. When you spend so much on your dress, flip flops just don't seem appropriate - but, its all a matter of taste!
