bbq with a Mexican Twist

Amanda, on July 28, 2020 at 12:16 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 27

Hello all!

So my fiancé and I both love BBQ food and Mexican food. At first, we were going to do only one but have decided to do BBQ with a Mexican twist. Doing so will also help to tie in my Mexican heritage.

My question is: has anyone done BBQ food with a Mexican twist or attended a wedding/party/event that has?

I have googled ideas and found some good ones but figured I would ask the WW community.

Thank you in advance!

At first we thought maybe just doing some bbq type food and having tacos, but I found this article when doing a google search and it provided some ideas!

Sounds good. Do a tasting beforehand. Have fillings of entrees available for vegetarians/vegans so they aren't stuck with just salad.

Thank you! We definitely will have vegetarian/vegan options. I know we have at least one vegetarian in that would be attending.

Are you having a cocktail hour and then the reception? Maybe you should keep the different styles of food separate instead of trying to merge Mexican and BBQ flavors into one dish. For example, the cocktail hour can include: mini tacos, mini tostadas, bite sized quesadillas, chips and salsa/guacamole, mini empanadas and margaritas, etc. Then dinner can be BBQ.

I don't think we're going to have a cocktail hour. We are going to have a super casual reception and just have a party. We aren't really flashy people and want to do keep it as chill as we can. But maybe we can do mini/bite sized options of different types of food.

    Thank you for the idea!

The menu options are endless: carne asada (as tacos or a small steak portion), refried beans, rice, coleslaw/potato salad, pulled pork or chicken, etc

Virgin and alcoholic margaritas, sweet tea.

My fiancé’s idea was: smoke tri-tip but marinade it in the carne marinade, Mexican rice, his mom’s baked beans, chili verde or chili Colorado.

In Texas this is called Tex-Mex. Like other pps said before, brisket tacos, pulled pork quesadillas, esquites aka corn in a cup, borracho beans, margaritas and sweet tea.

I wanted to do something similar for my wedding, but the caterer was unavailable. I wanted to have brisket and pulled pork with two options of eating them - bread and tortillas. So if people (Like FH) wanted BBQ sandwiches there would be BBQ sauce, pickles, and onions. And for those (like me) who wanted tacos they would have salsa, shredded cheese, etc. The main meats would be the same. Valentina’s in Austin does this at their food truck and they are AMAZING! It’s too bad they were booked for another event. 😭

When you interview caterers, ask if they'll work with your ideas.

This is second nature to my family, we do the bbq with ribs and for sides we do pico de gallo, well do some corn on the cob or in cups. Of course you have to have beans, may I suggest frijoles charros.

Like Jana said, maybe you could find a caterer in your area who would be willing to do the sandwich-Taco combo for you since it is pretty easy to set up. You might even inspire them to offer it in the future at other events and start a whole new trend! 😉
