bbq for a semi-formal wedding?

Elizabeth, on April 2, 2018 at 5:20 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 10

I have been struggling with food choices for our semi-formal reception. We will be having a destination wedding in a barn in the mountains. The only thing I would consider "rustic" is the fact it is in a barn, but it is an upscale one at that. I wanted to have a seated served dinner. I originally wanted a "farm to table" style meal. But there are no caterers in the area that offer it, and frankly I want the guests to rave about the food.

The is a phenomenal BBQ caterer in the area that will bring a smoker, and cut meat in front of our guests. I'm trying to figure out how to do amazing food, but keep the formality of a seated meal. HELP!

I think a phenomenal bbq sounds delicious! BBQ and an upscale barn sound like a fit to me. Can they serve? If not a buffet could still work.

Even if the look of the barn is upscale, guests will still dress a little more casual. I think you need to own it and just do the bbq and don't fight yourself on this. BBQ + barn + mountains, people won't be super dressy, certainly not semi formal. I'm not saying you need burlap, but people won't dress how you want them to as you are setting the tone with the venue/location.

What about hand carved smoked prime Herb roasted chicken breast
    Roasted medley of vegetables
    Baby spinach salad
    Grilled vegetables kabobs
Baked potato with sour cream and butter
    Cornbread muffins
    A vegetarian option

It sounds like the BBQ would work best as a buffet, but I think that’s fine! It sounds like a good match for your venue. You could consider doing a plated salad first so that dinner feels a little more formal. We’re doing chef stations for dinner but starting with a plated salad to get everyone in their seats for toasts.

They can definitely serve, but I am more concerned with the type of BBQ and it still being considered too informal. For reference, my fiancé and his best man (only groomsmen) will be in charcoal suits and my maid of honor will be in a floor length chiffon gown. No cowboy boots or anything like that (I'm a cowgirl at heart, just not for my wedding is all).

Summer 987, I like that suggestion! I will see what they could come up with and use your suggestion

They offer a carving station for a very reasonable price, I was thinking what if it was on wheels? Like it came to your table and cut your meet in front of you? Too much or cool idea?

I think if you have nice tableware, you can make almost any food look fancy. I’m always hyped for BBQ. If that’s what you want and you think your guests will like it, go for it!

Yep, i agree! OP, i think you are a little too focused on the attire of your BP. personally, i would skip the people coming to the table and cutting meat, etc. Your bbq sounds yummy!!!

I wouldn't do BBQ. That seems a little informal.

Our wedding party is also in suits/gowns, our venue is a lakeside "cabin" (inside is wood floors, exposed beams, huge fireplaces, wall of French doors), our decor is a mix of rustic and nicer (candles on wood slabs, but Mercury glass vases and satin tablecloths), and we are doing BBQ. It's just a delicious option! I think you can mix "rustic" and "formal" beautifully, but even if you go with just formal I'm sure guests will be thrilled to have tasty food--especially if it's the higher quality option in your area. Like, personally I'd rather have awesome BBQ than an average chicken dish and salad, despite the fact that the latter is considered more "formal."
