bbq at my wedding

Kristen, on August 29, 2019 at 11:50 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 13

Hi all!

I am getting married next September in Charlotte, NC (where we reside). I'm originally from Ohio (fiance is from SC) and most of my friends/family still live there or up North. I really love living in the South and for my wedding, I want to give all my Northerners a very Southern weekend. Because of this, we decided to have NC/SC-style BBQ for our catering. The guy I found is super authentic and is roasting a whole pig on-site the day of, plus sides, sauces, appetizers, etc. We're super excited about it!

What I'm struggling with is the casual-nature of it. Most BBQ caterers I've looked into serve on paper or plastic plates with plastic utensils. I just am worried about it not being fancy or nice enough for the overall feel and vibe of our wedding, if that makes sense. Or, on the reverse side, I'm worried everything else I'm planning (flowers, venue, dress, decor, etc) dont fit in with a BBQ wedding.

Any advice from women who have done something similar? For reference, our venue is Whitehead Manor (see photos below). Thanks in advance!

I totally understand you! We're having BBQ as our dinner menu as well and I was worried it wasn't "wedding" enough. So i'm actually purchasing fancy plastic plates with a gold rim from Amazon and I found a website for very affordable real utensils that I will also be purchasing. I will be dressing up the set up area to have it go with our theme.

You can choose any theme/decor in my opinion. Were having a lot of candles and some flowers. I'm trying to go for a romantic theme but have a good time with good food.

You’re right that BBQ definitely gives off a more casual vibe, especially if you’re planning for your guests to see the pig roast. I think that might be too casual and somewhat off putting for some guests. There’s nothing wrong with serving BBQ, but if you’re going for a formal or semi-formal feel, it might not be the best option.

With the right plates & utensils, I think you'll be just fine. While BBQ may seem a little casual, I don't think it will completely change the vibe of the whole day. I live in South Carolina and most weddings have BBQ. If you really want to dress it up, just have a plated dinner served on nice dishes Smiley smile

Also - I LOVE the idea of roasting the whole pig on site.

I got ya. I'm marrying at a country club in one of the ballrooms but our menu is bbq. They Club actually has it as one if the selections. I loved the vibe it will give our guests. We are from Delaware so bbq is what we do here. The ballroom has a patio thats connected to the ballroom. details are the things you connect together. Use VERY NICE disposable dinnerware and silverware. Gold beaded or design decorated avail at Amazon. I mean step up ya game on this detail. Also try having the meat setup like a restaurant with stations. That'll elevate the bbq theme.

As PPs have said, it's going to come down to the plates and flatware. Ask your vendors what they provide. If nothing appeals to you and the vibe you're going for, Amazon or Costco have great options at relatively low cost. I love a pig roast and I think your guests will appreciate it too. Think about all those luaus we saw in old movies, they were done in classy ways and you can do a pig roast with all the class they had!

I think serving on china is totally fine. It still seems semi-casual since it's BBQ but in my opinion you can have country touches and still have a nicer wedding.

We are serving BBQ at our wedding too, we bought plates and silverware from www.webstaurantstore.com We just got nice black plastic plates and we bought silver colored plastic silverware. They are really durable and don't feel cheap! We got 400 plates and I got 1000 appetizer/dessert plates with all the silverware for like $250 including shipping! We have 215 people on our guest list.

I like the idea and with your venue being a house, it’s perfect for a “backyard barbecue”. Given that, I would keep the barbecue concept and rework your ideas for the flowers and decor. You can even use nicer plates, cups and silverware instead of paper and plastic. It can still be somewhat casual but with an upscale BBQ style.

Hi Kristen...you can possibly use dressy disposable cutlery (available on Amazon...see photo below). Also, not trying to give you an extra expense but you could possibly have a personalized apron ( a catchy phrase with you and your fiance' name and wedding date) as a favor for your guests....distributed upon entry into the reception area. Wishing you all the best!

Yall are the best!!! Thank you so much. I feel so much better about this now. Fancy shmancy disposable plates and utensils are the way I'm going to go and I think we might rent water goblets as well as have water/sweet tea dispensers and have cute little glass pitchers on tables as well.

THANKS SO MUCH LADIES! Smiley smile I love this community!!

There are so many options that it’s paper/plastic plates and silverware now that some you wouldn’t even know it wasn’t something expensive. That is what we did for our wedding. Also, I think barbecue fits wonderfully with your venue, coming from someone who has lived in the South their whole life.
