Bartender tip jar

Sarah, on August 29, 2017 at 9:57 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 19

I hadn't thought about this before but are y'all going to have a tip jar for your bartender? I'll have an open bar and planned to tip them a bulk amount the end of the night...

Nope. I don't want my guests paying for anything.

Ok! My gut said no and I don't want them to feel like they have to tip for a thing! Thank you for the reassurance!

We have several venues who put little signs on the bar that say, "No tipping please; the hosting has been taken care of by ____ and _____"

I hate seeing tip cups on the bar but this is the fact; in almost every wedding I've been to ( like almost 1600 now....) the guest will throw a couple of bucks at the BT, tip jar or not. The only way to avoid that (and I'm not sure it 100% works) is those signs.

No tip jar! It makes a guest feel awkward like they are supposed to tip, while the drinks themselves are paid by the hosts (hopefully they are paid anyway!).

I haven't heard of doing a sign like that... I would rather that than a plastic jar!

I tip the bartenders at every single wedding I attend. I usually just throw them a $10 or $20 in the beginning of the night. I honestly have never been to a wedding where the guests didn't tip the bartenders.

@Celia, that's a brilliant idea. We are not doing a tip jar because as hosts it is our responsibility to take care of these things. But you are right, the signs will ensure that our guests don't feel like they absolutely have to tip.

You may not even have to worry about it at all. The catering company I work for does not allow for there to be a tip jar. Some guests still tip anyway, but that is very kind of you to be prepared to tip the bartender out at the end of the night. You'd be surprised at how many people don't budget for tips.

Definitely no tip jar. Your guests should not be prompted to tip. Tipping is the host's job.

However, many guests will still choose to tip on their own accord and that is fine. They can just hand it to the bartender.

Yes I've wracked my brain figuring out how much to tip every vendor! I always tip a bartender as a guest but I definitely don't want my guests to feel bad if they didn't, which with a jar they probably would. Eat, drink and be married!

There was a red solo cup out on the bar at the wedding I attended this past weekend. I don't mind tipping but I think the look of a tip cup or jar is just tacky. If you are planning to tip them at the end of the night then maybe a sign like @Celia was talking about would work best.

@Celia - yeah, i'm pretty sure H would tip regardless of the signs. But, he's worked as a bartender and always has a soft spot for service industry employees.

@OP - if people are going to tip, they don't need a jar to help them. As others have pointed out, a tip jar may just make someone feel bad who didn't bring cash for tipping.

Not a fan of the tip jar. I don't want my guests paying for anything. My venue had mandatory valet and I even paid for that for my guests.

We are not allowed to put out a tip jar. We can accept tips, but we keep it out of view. Guests will ask us and I do tell them that we are taken care. If they want to tip then at least they know that we are taken care of. I always tip at weddings. I personally think it is tacky for a bartender to have a jar out.

This didn't even cross my mind. We've always tipped lol. Mind blown. Although I like tipping, you all are right, I don't want my guests worrying that they have to. That's something to bring up at my next meeting with the venue. Thanks!

@Ariella V. I hadn't thought about it at all either until the service I hired asked me. I was stumped for a minute and then confirmed here that it looks bad! Plus of course not wanting guests to spend a dime unless they absolutely WANT to tip!
