Bartender had tip jar

on October 26, 2020 at 7:25 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 11
Our two bartenders had a tip jar out at our wedding this weekend. Would you still send them a tip on top of that? If so, how much?

No tipping on top of that seems excessive to me

I wouldn’t allow them to have a tip jar for this exact reason. It’s not your guest’s responsibility to tip your vendors and you have no idea how much they made. I would tip at least 10%.

I did not think about it that way at the time. Too late now.

They did that to us too. My mom was upset because we had tip ready ahead of time but didn’t give it to them when we saw the tip jar there. It was a miscommunication I guess.

    This is standard.

Please also remember that many bar tenders are still out of their regular job/missed months and months of work.

I don’t believe leaving a tip jar out is standard...

It's not standard. But it should be made clear beforehand to not have it out as the hosts tip. And guests should not be opening their wallets to tip any vendors.

At a bar, yes, a tip jar is standard. At weddings, no--having a tip jar out is definitely not standard. I agree with Caytlyn and would tip 10% at least.

It's completely standard where I am.

I would not be shocked by this at all, and would expect to tip a little.

You should still tip. They likely made very little from the tip jar.
