Barn Wedding in New England

mals, on November 2, 2015 at 10:06 AM Posted in Planning 0 19

We're looking to have an affordable wedding (less than 30k) with about 210-300 people. We would to bring our own caterer and alcohol, but it's been hard to find places that allow this. We're most attracted to barns, farms, settings with New England charm. And we're looking to get married between June-Aug 2017.

I know that's asking a lot, but if anyone knows of a place, we'd LOVE to hear from you! THANKS SO MUCH!

Have you tried the vendors tool on WW? Also, the best way to cut the wedding cost is to cut the guest list. ALL of your prices are going to spin on how many people you invite and 210-300 people is A HUGE wedding.

Okay, the voice of reality rears her ugly head.

This is not going to be affordable. The barns themselves, without one chair or carrot stick, are multiple thousands. Add an off premise caterer, all your rentals, staffing and food? Way over your budget.

First, cut the guest list. I know, I know, it's what everyone says, but everyone says it because it's true. And charm is hard to pull off for that size group.

If you can get it down, look at inclusive sites; Perona Farms, in NJ (I know that's not technically New England) is gorgeous and can seat up to 200 ish. I was there this weekend and it was great.

The Apple Farm Barn is outside of Woodstock, very barn like and my couple had a terrific wedding there, but it was not cheap.

Welcome to WeddingWire @mals! Smiley smile

As @Celia mentioned, the idea of a 'cheap' barn setting is actually misleading. While beautiful, they usually come completely empty ~ which means you have to bring everything in, which definitely adds up! Something to keep in mind Smiley smile

In the WeddingWire vendor catalog, you can filter your search by 'type,' so you can find results that are specifically more rustic, such as 'farm' or 'winery'. It will also help you get a better idea of the price point you're looking at: www.weddingwire.com

I love the look of the Smith Barn, it is in Peabody and ended up being too far away for us but it is beautiful, I know of a couple people who have had weddings there and loved it. Also I went to a wedding a couple years ago at Mount Hope Farm in Rhode Island and it was also very nice! Not sure about pricing but I know that Mount Hope lets you self-cater. Good luck!

The Old Grey Barn in Pawlet Vermont. Its gorgeous, but you HAVE to bring in your own alcohol / caterer. It includes tables and such, but not much else. I think that runs about $1500 if I remember correctly.

Oh and one thing to keep in mind, if you look at this one... It in working farm country. Awesome if you want corn standing in the background, rolling Vermont hill with only super pretty farm houses in site. Less awesome when they spread manure in spring and fall. Usually that ends by the time the corn comes up (june) and starts again before winter (Oct - Nov)

    It smells very ... Vermont.

Did you look into vacation rentals? If you find a barn you will be bringing everything in so why not rent a country cottage and bring everything in, might end up being cheaper. But with the guest list you will have to find one with land.

If you're willing to cut down your guest list a little bit, I just went to a wedding at Quonquont Farm in Whately, MA which was great and they allow you to bring in your own caterer. I'm pretty sure it would be within your budget. It's in an apple orchard, and was absolutely gorgeous with great service.

    Look at:

Smith farm, Peabody MA and Bittersweet farm, Westport MA. I also really love Gibbet Hill in Groton.

my wedding was at the Holliston Historical Society (Holliston MA) for the amount of people you want you would need to rent a tent also for my venue but my Caterer Barry who owns Dinner and Company in Bellingham MA is fantastic, also you bring in your own alcohol so that can save you some money. (photo of the barn that my wedding was in)

eta: Mount Hope Farm in RI is beautiful also

There's tons of barn wedding locations in Ct... Use the wedding wire venue locator, especially since you said New England, but New England covers a large area... Not sure where in New England your looking.

    Btw, Welcome to Wedding Wire.

A barn wedding (which is the trendy thing to do right now) during those months (most popular for weddings) for that many people without an all-inclusive is going to be a nightmare and will likely not be in your budget. As others have said, you should bring your guest list down. Barring that, choose another month to get married. If you can't do that, then I would seriously consider how much wiggle room there is in your budget.

The Webb-Deane Barn in Wethersfield, CT is really cute. I went to a wedding there. But I think it may be too small for your guest list.

I'll second looking into Bittersweet Farm. But I also agree with trying to cut the list down a bit, and/or looking into a less popular day or month.

I priced a lot of barns. The only one that I found even close to a reasonable price was Zukas farm out in Western MA. I think they were almost entirely inclusive and they supply a tent.

The Smith Barn at Brooksby Farms is BEYOND EXPENSIVE. $20k for 100 guests, minimum. They have very strict rules about what's allowed in terms of catering, etc. The barn is also on the small side and may be cramped for the number of guests you have.

Gibblet is also very expensive, at least from what I priced out for a summer wedding.

I agree with @Elizabeth. A barn wedding is becoming exceedingly popular, and the farms know this now. From what I remember during my research, the ones that supplied their own caterer and bar were less expensive, mostly because you wouldn't have to pay for the liability insurance for both (separately). Hiring your own vendors for that can be very tricky. Most of the time you have to select from their (limited) list of pre-approved.

    Best of luck!

Oh also you're allowed to bring in whatever vendors you want and the owner of the location is really cool. So if you can cut back on the guest list you can actually have a very affordable wedding… We are keeping ours under 10,000 for 75 people including catering alcohol etc.
