Bar drink advice and Bartender Tipping

Taylor, on August 13, 2020 at 12:52 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 8

I know this question gets asked frequently but I feel like it's so case by case basis. We hired a bar service for the wedding but opted to pick up and deliver our own alcohol. I have two questions for this!

1. If you were going to a wedding, what would you prefer? We were planning on 3 beers (Bud Light, Michelob Ultra, and Dos XX or Shiner Bock), 2 wines (red and white), and some liquor. We're stuck on the liquor though. Originally, we thought we'd do three signature drinks (French 75, Grapefruit Rose Vodka, and Whiskey Coke) but now I'm wondering if I should just buy regular vodka, whiskey, and gin with all the mixers and then maybe do one signature drink. The three original signature drinks used very specific flavored liquors and each drink called for multiple things. I'm trying to decide if it would be more cost efficient and please more people to be able to order a vodka cranberry, whiskey sprite, etc. as opposed to three very specific drinks.

2. What is expected as a tip for the bartenders? We have to supply our own alcohol. They're just showing up and serving. We're paying $35/hour/bartender for 4 hours, $250 for the disposables, limes, bar set up, and tax of course. With our crowd, beer will probably be the biggest hit. Guest count is roughly 200.

Thanks for your input in advance. I appreciate itSmiley smile

I think you can still do the French 75 and Whiskey Coke signature drinks. The classic French 75 recipe just calls for regular gin and Whiskey Coke just requires regular coke. So I would maybe set those 2 up as signature drinks (I think people like having a signature drink as an easy order if they can't think of what they want) and then those who want something else can still get that.

Here are two great articles to hopefully answer your questions.

50% wine, 20% beer, and 30% liquor. If you're having 100 guests and a four-hour reception, for example, you'd purchase 200 servings of wine, 80 servings of beer, and 60 servings of liquor.

You noted your crowd is mostly beer drinkers.... I'd swap the beer and wine ratios

Most experts will recommend having at least two of everything: One red wine, one white wine; one light beer, one darker variety; one clear liquor, one brown.

As for a tip I'd probably tip 20-25% of the final total pending their service

What do your guests drink? Ask a few of your family ands to get an idea. Every group is different with preferences. I personally don't drink beer or wine but have noticed that the majority of folks tend to prefer whiskey & Coke, something with rum or something with tequila, even in different circles. However another group may prefer something else entirely so ask your guests who will be drinking it.

Thank you so much! That was very helpful. For the tip, do you mean 20%-25% of their bill or 20%-25% of the total (their bill and the cost of the alcohol that we go purchase ourselves)?

Final vendor bill - don't tip them on what you purchased. LOL...

I'm just guessing... There will probably be a tip jar and if you see people filling those up, I'd still stick with at least 20%.

Sounds like your guests are "country" - not yee haw country... just a little more casual country...

Anyway you'll never go wrong with plain vodka and jack daniels (unless the area you're in has a better dark)

Perfect! Thank youSmiley smile I've seen a lot of "20% of the final tab" but in my head, it doesn't make sense to tip them on the alcohol itself... especially if I'm going and getting it myself. LOL

Don't let them put out a tip jar; the tip is your responsibility, not your guests'. I would probably tip a flat amount per bartender, like $20-$25 each.
