Baptist and drinking

Ashley, on February 21, 2020 at 11:47 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 23
So, I’m baptist, but I enjoy drinking and so do my friends. However I’m wondering if it’s gonna be totally weird to drink in front of my pastor and church family. I’m not getting hammered, but I know where my pastor stands on the issue. My church family isn’t the type to call my out or make me feel bad about that stuff, but I’m just wondering if anyone else had this situation and how you approached it?

I’m Christian and we had alcohol at our wedding aha I think they know that just because you and they are Christian doesn’t mean every single other person at the wedding is.

So you don’t think it’ll be totally weird to drink in front of them?

It’s your wedding. Be yourself! I wouldn’t think twice about what other people were thinking. Especially regarding my drinking habits. If they have a problem with alcohol, they likely wont attend anyway.

They know it’ll be your wedding day and you want to celebrate. I think it’ll be fine. I wouldn’t think too much about it.

I know it’s my wedding and I should do what I want, but should I tell them in advance there is alcohol at the wedding, or just let it be a surprise lol?

You could mention it on your website. Otherwise, if you want to mention it to your pastor specifically, I think that is fine, but not necessary. I think most people except alcohol at weddings nowadays lol.

That’s a good point. I’m not sure if they expect alcohol bc my other friends didnt have alcohol at their wedding, and we all go to the same church. But maybe I’m over thinking things. It’s a beer and wine only venue, so I guess that’s pretty mild

I'm sure they will be able to handle it, like they would at other weddings or restaurants or bars where other people are drinking. We had a ton of alcohol at our wedding and no one on my husband's side immediate family drinks. It didn't factor into our decision at all and never has for past parties.

We’re kids invited to the wedding? I’ve told people kids are welcome, but now I’m wondering if that was a mistake.

Yes, tons of kids. We invited over 30 kids under 10. We ended up with around 6 kids under 10 but they either left before the adults got pretty drunk (8 or 9 PM) or didn't care.

Like underage drinking? We had two licensed bartenders so that wasn't even a consideration for us, anyone that looked 21 or younger was carded.

We’re just having one... but honestly most of us look under 21. But maybe I should just have the bartender stamp those who have already shown their ID, but that wouldn’t stop someone from getting a drink for someone else. I’m spiraling

I’m having about 5 Pastors/ministers to attend my wedding & I’ll definitely be drinking and partying! It’s your wedding so make the best of it! The Bible says to drink in moderation so as long as you’re not drunk then you’ll be okay!

Yeah, most baptist would recommend not drinking at all lol. I know all denominations view it differently as well as each person within my specific church. I think I’m just gonna drink a little bit since I know they aren’t gonna judge me anyway

I'm Christian and in the past have felt the same way regarding drinking in front of my church family. However, it's a celebration! Go and enjoy yourself! For as much as I'm paying for this wedding, I'm doing whatever I wany to lol. God knows my heart and he's the ONLY one that can judge me.

Considering Jesus's first miracle was literally creating wine from water at a wedding, I don't even understand why drinking at a Christian wedding would be frowned upon.

I am an interfaith marriage where my family really doesn't drink and my FH's family does. We are having an open bar for everyone to enjoy if they choose, but it also gives "virgin" drink options as well as well as soda, juice and tea. I think as long you're not hammered your church family shouldn't be bothered. No one that I know that will be attending get overly drunk and we are providing transport to our guests from our venue to the hotel so no one will be driving,
