Band vs. Dj

To anyone that has experience hiring entertainment, what are the pros and cons in hiring a band instead of a dj. I'm looking into a place that offers both but the band is almost $200 cheaper. Any opinions?

Im going to have both and a 'hora loca' with some folkloric music... Now be sure to ask them for videos/audio of other events that they have been too... I have heard great things and have seen some terrible ones too! Good luck

We have both. The lead singer is performing at the ceremony. Then we have the band playing during dinner hour. The DJ will work part of the ceremony (prelude, processional, and recessional) then will run the reception. I also have a steel drum player for the cocktail hour. We kinda went all out for music. LOL!

In my case the DJ is the most expensive. I got lucky with the band. I think we caught them in their infancy stage and as they get more exposure their cost will go way up.

If I could afford it, I would have a band. I live for live music and my FH and I are both show junkies. Most of our friends are the same way and they LOVE to dance at shows. I can't dance to piped in music. It feels fake to me. I like the raw emotion of a band. That being said, a wedding is not a concert, and we are broke. So unless the Dave Matthews Band just magically reads my mind and wants to play at our wedding for free, we will likely go with a DJ. Smiley smile

We have a band. They're good and they're versatile, but they're significantly more expensive than we budgeted for a DJ. We would have gone with a DJ for cost reasons, but my dad really wanted this particular band and he was willing to pay for it so we went with the band.
