Bakery is now trying to upcharge on our cake!

Sarah, on June 12, 2018 at 4:27 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 8

FH and I went to our cake tasting at our venue's proprietor a couple months ago. We went in with a specific cake design (white with gold brush strokes). Knowing that our cake is part of our reception package, we specifically asked the girl helping us if our requested design would be additional. She said that the only additional charge would be if we decided to go with fondant on the cake, which we opted not to. We even filled out our order forms with the girl and went through the process to put in our order and still nothing was said about additional charge for gold brush strokes.

Yesterday, I emailed to follow up on the cake and confirm our buttercream (we had a choice between two kinds that we wanted to talk over before deciding), and now the cake designer is telling us that it is an additional $200 for the gold. Needless to say, we are a bit upset about this since it was not communicated to us when we specifically asked about! We are in love with the design that we originally picked, and now that we are just a month away from our wedding and have already purchased most of our supplies, services, etc., we don't have the budget to add to the cake. Has anyone run into a problem like this before? Anyone have advice on how to handle this situation?

If you had your contract originally stated with the gold brush strokes and the final price than there shouldn’t be an upcharge and you should 100% fight that! My contract includes my inspiration picture so if you sent her any of that, forward it to her and let her know that there is absolutely no reason you should be upcharged bc she knew good and well what you wanted in the first place. But be prepared to not love your cake... bc making a vendor mad is always a questionable idea

Unless you have a contract with the details and price spelled out, there isn't much you can do.

Do you have anything in writing that shows you were getting the gold stokes and not paying more? If so, scan a copy and attach it to an email back to the designer stating that you specifically mentioned the design when placing the order with ____ (don't call her "the girl", get her name). _____ made no mention of any additional charge and you are confused as to why, all this time, an additional charge was never mentioned. Check your venue contract as well for any mention of any additional cake charge. See what the response is and if need-be, include the venue manager in the correspondence.

We do have the order form that specifically shows "gold brush strokes." It also states that in order to have gold brush strokes we would need to choose between Swiss buttercream (no additional charge spelled out on this option) or fondant (which would be an extra $250). I was email to follow up on that specific line that we are option for the Swiss buttercream at no additional charge. I'll make sure to scan the order form to show proof that we were not told of the charge specific to just the gold brush strokes.

As long as you have a signed contract stating what the agreed upon came is then there is no additional charge that you should have to pay. If you don't have a signed contract then they can charge for the additional gold brush strokes.

I would call and ask to speak with the girl you originally spoke with, and then her manager. Hopefully they can do the gold without the upcharge, since that's what they originally told you!

There was no specific contract for the bakery since the cake is included in our venue package, so we just have an order form. I looked through our venue contract and there are no stipulations stating that there are certain elements that would be an extra charge for the included cake. All it specifies in the venue contract is "custom tiered wedding cake included."
