Baked Potato Bar

Chloe, on March 4, 2020 at 11:17 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 15
Hello! I need some opinions... We are having a rooftop wedding on July 4th this year. It's about 80 people and semi-casual, (but no jeans kinda event). I love baked potatoes and was thinking of serving a baked potato bar from Jason's Deli. If you're not familiar with them, they serve baked potatoes the size of a chipolte burrrito, with all cold toppings included, and choices of hot toppings like (chili, chicken, or broccoli chedder cheese).
I was thinking of serving this with some salads, but I am wondering if this will be enough? I think serving wise we would end up with leftovers... But would you consider it a meal? If not what would you add?
The pros are it would be filling, hot toppings would cover the protein, it could easily be vegetarian, and its one of the more affordable options. But what are your thoughts?

I love that idea! We just hosted a birthday last weekend and our potato bar was a huge hit. It was a pretty informal birthday though. AND they are crazy messy.

I think it sounds really good but I wouldn’t consider it a full meal just because I don’t know, it’s hard for me personally to want it to be my full meal

That sounds soooo good. I would be hesitant to consider that enough for a whole meal though, especially for folks who may not be baked potato fans. I would probably another kind of entrée option or a few different hot bar type options. Maybe adding some kind of protein/carving station with a meat or two or doing a build your own pasta type of thing. Just something to make sure no one leaves hungry Smiley smile

Yes that’d be delicious!! You could always do with soup and salad if you wanted. My work caters this in for lunches every so often and I’m always full from it. They offer rolls with it to!

I think this is a great idea - I particularly love baked potato! I do think you need something else, though. I think some sort of protein will go a long way!

I like this idea. A local restaurant serves a bbq stuffed baked potato. So small potato, bacon, cheese, and a meat. I consider it a meal.
I'd suggest 2 meat options. But I like the idea a lot!

Love it! My friend did this but it was not the meal. Also, a lot of people don’t like or eat potatoes, especially with all the low carbers.

I would not consider a baked potato a meal, I'd consider it a side. My husband would have to eat about 6 baked potatoes before he was actually full haha

I don't know that everyone would want to eat a potato "the size of a chipotle burrito" no matter the choice of cold or hot toppings. I think it's fine to offer this as part of a meal, but I would serve smaller potatoes or cut the giant ones, so people can take a reasonable portion alongside the rest of their meal.

What time is your wedding? If it is at 2:00 or 3:00, I think this is an acceptable "meal". But if your wedding is around a meal time, especially dinner, then you would need to serve an actual meal. Though Jason's Deli's baked potatoes are big, they don't constitute a full meal.

I agree with others I wouldn't consider a baked potato a full meal. There are also context issues I'd consider. If your wedding is on the 4th of July, even without a wedding, I think that is a pretty big "party" day for many people more often associated with bbqs, etc., so just a baked potato might be kind of a disappointment foodwise. Also, depending on where you live, if it's going to be hot out, I don't see adding soup as a great option. You said it will be a very casual wedding, so that fits okay.

I like it. I would definitely have the salad or a veggie tray and then maybe cupcakes or cookies for dessert!

I would definitely say you need to add a meat to this. I LOVE baked potatoes but I know of quite a few people that do not. Leaving them with only a side salad for dinner would not be okay.

I wouldn't consider this a full meal. I love a good baked potato with toppings but consider this a fun side... I like the ideas above about adding a carving station.

Baked potatoes are very filling, especially when you add toppings and side salads. Your menu sounds great and no one will go hungry.
