Bahamas in September

Ms.G, on December 13, 2016 at 1:07 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 15

So google is no help! FH and I have our hearts set on Atlantis in the Bahamas for our honeymoon. I know that coincides with hurricane season there. Reviews I've read online say its the beginning of the season and still beautiful, but I worry about online reviews because you never know who wrote them. Anyone do Bahamas is September before? We are willing to push off until November if it would be more ideal.

Soooo I just went to the Bahamas at the end of September this year. I thought like you, it's beautiful weather. What are the chances? Well hurricane Matthew hit and my resort got evacuated two days after we left and was closed for three months. Thank goodness our trip ended two days earlier then they evacuated.

Morale of the story - I learned it's not worth it. People at the resort were stressed about it and it impacted their vaca. If you are set on doing it, then get travel insurance

I love the Bahamas tho! Great place to go

I wouldn't do it. The islands are usually the first places that hurricanes and tropical storms hit.

June 1st is the beginning of hurricane season and ends nov 1, and sept/oct are usually the months with most activity (I live in FL)... I'd be iffy about going then

November would be best. I believe last year September had 12 rainy days in the Caribbean. That's a lot. And risky

If you go anytime during hurricane season it's a risk, there's no way to know. I went in October two years ago and it was absolutely perfect and gorgeous the whole time. Get travel insurance if you're worried about it though

There is always a risk. If you wanna go at that time, you can go just be sure to get travel insurance in case something does happen you will be refunded/reimbursed.

Wait and go like the beginning of december. It's right after Hurricane season so it might rain, but there are usually deals because it's not a super popular time. Note: don't go the end of December, that's popular because kids are out of school.

I know someone who took their honeymoon during hurricane season. The windows in their room got blown in from a hurricane and they spent a long, scary night in the bathtub. The resort was ruined from the storm from the rest of their trip and they had a miserable time. Is that a chance you're willing to take??

Thankyou everyone, I think we may just hold off. I want to enjoy every second of it, and if that means waiting then its worth it!

I got stuck at Atlantis on a normal rainy day and it was more rain than I ever saw in my life. I can't imagine what it's like in hurricane season nor do I want to find out. Don't go!

We went to Atlantis on a cruise (we docked there for the day) HORRIBLE. It is nothing like they make it out to be. I expected this amazing resort and it was like a cheap Vegas hotel. Definitely look into it and do your research.

You'll probably have enough to worry about and I'm sure you wouldn't want an extra headache. Atlantis is amazing and beautiful but going in September is chancy. The Bahamas is prone to hurricanes and tropical storms. Your honeymoon is suppose to be peaceful/relaxing, you shouldn't have to worry about a storm. Go in November!

I'm a meteorologist. Hurricane season for the Atlantic is June 1 - Nov 1, with peak being in September. That's not to say there will definitely be a hurricane in September affecting the Bahamas. However, I personally wouldn't risk it. There's really no way to know if you'll have a problem til a few weeks out. November CAN still have hurricanes, but it is less likely. Just my two cents from a science perspective.

I've gone to the Bahamas in September for the past three years without issue. I grew up in super south Florida (I was here for Andrew!) and now live in central Florida. It's going to rain in September. And in August and October. But there are gorgeous days too. If you want to do it, book insurance so you can change the trip in case of hurricane.
