Bad Audio on Wedding Video

FredheartShan, on October 30, 2017 at 1:09 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 6

I received the raw footage from my wedding video. I know that raw footage mean that no adjustments have been made but the video was truly awful to listen to. The videographer may have forgotten to turn off his alternate microphone. This caused a very loud distortion, feedback, static, sound. You could barely hear most of the video. We could not hear most of the greeting that our guests left for us. You could not hear the music in the first dance. It was just awful. I am truly upset. I cant get those moments back. We cant get those words back. I am not sure what to do at this point. Ask for compensation? What can compensation do to help me get this moment back? I truly would like feedback, I don't know what to do?

I would wait til you have edited footage. If you to ask him specific questions as to whether or not certain things can be done, go for it (calmly), but you really should wait and see what he comes up with. A LOT can be done with editing. If it comes back badly in the end you have recourse to ask for compensation, but for now I would try to relax. See what he can do with editing. And maybe see if any of your guests filmed anything (lots of iPhone photographers out there these days!)

Try not to freak out until you talk to him! He may be able edit the audio. When you say you got the raw video, does that mean your contract included only a raw video with no edited product?

Wait til you get the final product. Then if it's bad ask for your money back. Yes it's moments you "can't get back" but for the vast majority of human history no one was able to record these things. It's still special, but try to keep it in perspective.

If you opted for the raw version only, look very carefully at your contract. It likely covers "bad" (really just unedited) audio as part of the deal for the raw audio.

Thank you for the feedback. The company sends you the video to pick out scenes you would like in the 10 minute video montage. In the contract it says that we also get to raw cut. Like an old school video with all of your guest giving you well wishes.

I will ask if there is something they can do about the audio. I am not sure why they would send something with such terrible sound quality. Even the video montage will need clear audio.

One of the videographers we had a consultation with taught us that raw footage will be extra long and from multiple cameras because one camera may catch the actual feed while another camera doesn't. He explained that's why the editing costs so much and takes so long, because they piece meal everything together. He said if we paid the extra $500 for raw footage, we'd basically be getting 3 different versions of EVERYTHING. This may be the case with you so I wouldn't be so discouraged until you see the final, edited version.

ETA: This may not speak for ALL videographers. The company we decided to book with has audio on ALL of their cameras so our raw footage from them would be pieced together with the camera that had the best angle. So only one long clip compared to that other company's version of three separate clips.
