Backyard wedding?

dexlovely, on February 20, 2015 at 10:49 AM Posted in Planning 0 7

So my fiancé and I are thinking about having a backyard wedding for our wedding, May 2016. We will be having less than 50 people for our ceremony and reception. My question is, do you have to have a 'nice' backyard to have a backyard wedding? Our house will have at least .50 acre but I'm not sure if will be too tight for our guests, or not wedding appropriate on what you would see in magazines... I know it's kind of early but that's our number 1 option right now, if it doesn't work out, we would have to look at somewhere else.. Please share your thoughts? Have anyone have backyard weddings before or been to one. How is the yard? Thanks.

I went to a backyard wedding this summer. It was in the country, so they had a lot of room. There was probably 125 people there. We were seated at tables for the ceremony and reception.

Our house right now sits on almost an acre, and I've hosted 50+ people here easily. It's all about setting up your tables/chairs/etc the right way, and using all of the space properly.

A picture and a general idea of how you want it to look would be helpful.

You would just need to account for things like parking, insurance, restrooms, rentals (chairs, tables, linens, etc), a tent in case of rain, dance floor, etc I think it can end up more expensive/more work than a venue sometimes. I haven't been to one personally. Half an acre may be enough room. I have no idea visually how big that is to say.

I've catered or officiated at a LOT of backyard weddings, but Stephanie brought up some good points. It usually does end up being at least as expensive as a venue, but if it's your dream, 50 guests is certainly do-able.

I am having a backyard wedding and it will be as nice as you want it to be. I am only inviting 40 max people. My FH wants a tent reception so we are doing that. We will have to be careful about stakes hitting water and sewer lines but that isn't a big deal. I am doing some landscaping but I am for sure putting up a privacy fence. I wanted something simple without all the time restrictions and all the rules. The way we are looking at is why sink 2-3 thousand into renting a venue when we can put it into our own home and yard. I have been to a few backyard weddings that have been way over done and one offered hot dogs roasted over open fire pits on a stick. It will be what you want regardless if it is in a backyard or a rented venue.

I looked into this. My parents have 5 acres. The cost of renting tents (in case of bad weather) tables , chairs, port a potties, etc was easily more then the cost of a venue.
