Backyard Wedding- Social Distancing

Angelica, on June 17, 2020 at 2:35 PM Posted in California Planning 0 8
I’m in Southern CA and currently masks are not required, but recommended. Our gyms are open, restaurants(but require a mask to get to your seat) places have live music with dancing happening.

We were always planning a backyard wedding with about 90 guests.
I believe the current regulations are outdoor venues don’t have a max # of guests but that tables must follow social distance guidelines of 6 feet apart.
We won’t be able to accommodate our tables being 6 feet apart with 90 guests.
Our wedding is 10/10/2020 so we decided to wait until mid August to make a decision about guest size & order invites then.
We could fit 60 guests with 6 feet apart. Or all 90 but not 6 feet apart. What would you do? What might be the guest perspective?
Also 98% of our guests are all located in Southern CA

I wouldn't risk breaking these specific rules...I would reduce the guest list and explain to each invitee why it's happening. You may have fewer people decline to attend, too, if they know you're taking the social distancing measures seriously. Good luck!

I would reduce too. i don't foresee social distancing to be over with this year.

If you are in a private yard, and considering these are recommended guidelines and not laws, I would personally go ahead and invite everyone if that’s what you want to do. As long as the tables aren’t one on top of the next, your guests can make the decision on whether or not they are comfortable attending. I would lay all of the details out either on your website or in an email so guests know what to expect if the choose to come, and then they can make the best decision for themselves.

Do what you feel is right. I would invite them all. It’s outdoors and you probably will have more declines due to current circumstances.

I agree with Kate. It’ll be on private property and you can’t really break a guideline. Even if you invite all 90 most likely they won’t all show up and even if they do 3-4 feet apart, outdoors, in the fall, I think will be fine. You’ll probably end up with 50-70 guests anyway since a lot of people are choosing to stay away from populated areas. I say go for it.

Thanks everyone! I’m feeling more confident about just inviting everyone.

However, I think MAYBE 10 people won’t come. Everyone we’ve invited are close family that live only 45 minutes away but perhaps I’ll be surprised with a lower attendance.

If you are worried I would reduce your guest count and invite the guests you had to cut to join using zoom or Facebook live. Personally on private property I do not believe the county has the power to or will come and ruin your day.

I also think things like the spacing guidelines might be here to stay for the near future, and that your guests will also appreciate seeing these safety measures in place!

It sounds like you have a good plan to re-evaluate closer to August on your final guest list number, and will be prepared either way!
