Backyard wedding restrooms

Victoria, on July 23, 2018 at 9:34 AM Posted in Planning 0 10
So I am getting married next May and we are having a small ceremony and reception all in my fathers backyard. We will have up to 80 people, no more, and the yard space should work just fine. Our issue is bathrooms. My father is a rather picky person and is refusing to rent portable bathrooms. He has a large house with 2 large bathrooms and 1 small master bath. He says he plans to get the septic pumped before and after the wedding and have everyone use the 2 large bathrooms in the house, leaving the master bath free for me to get ready/use. Now everything I have read says portable bathrooms are a must but his plan does not sound too bad... My main concern of the day is making our family and friends comfortable so I am just looking for advice. Portable bathrooms outside or 2 in-house bathrooms (septic pumped before&after) for 80 guests?

Hi Victoria! Welcome to the WeddingWire Community! Smiley ring I think since your dad is okay with having your guests come into the house to use the bathrooms, it wouldn't be a bad idea. I know it would definitely make everyone feel more comfortable! Just design a plan to only permit a certain number at a time to avoid overcrowding!

They have really nice portable potties for weddings. They can set up a tent to use and it is very clean. But if dad is okay with the traffic in his house then I would not worry too much. It will also save a little money.

Most septic systems can handle at least 500 gallons per day and if empty, there is between 900 and 1000 gallons of space. The average flush is under 2 gallons, so if each of your guests uses the facilities twice, that's 320 gallons. You should be fine.

I'd buy disposable guest towels for hygiene reasons. Vanity Fair at Walmart/Target. Basic white and $4 or so for 45. Be sure to stockup on TP and soap!!

Thank you all so much! This has helped a lot. I feel much better about the indoor bathrooms. I love the idea of disposable towels, I am also thinking of decorating the bathrooms a bit with soaps and other little things to make it seem more guest friendly.

One bathroom serves roughly 25 people. Will your guests be able to use the 3rd bathroom after the ceremony? If so I think you’ll be good to go so to speak!

I think the indoor bathrooms will be fine. I would tell the bridal party & family that the master bathroom is an option to alleviate some of the potential lines for the other 2 bathrooms. Also - have some air freshener in the bathrooms as well.

If the third bathroom will open up after you're ready and the ceremony is over, then I think the indoor will be fine. I would suggest you consider hiring someone for the hours after the ceremony to go between the three bathrooms for a quick clean up/stock TP and soap/make sure it smells fresh.

I'm not sure what exactly it costs to pump a septic in your area, but I still wouldn't do it. You never know if people don't realize they can't flush specific things down a septic tank. They have portable restrooms in trailers that aren't port-o-pottys. They are flush toilets and the bathroom inside looks like an actual bathroom with tile floors, mirrors, and running water. I'd go with that.

I have to agree with FutureMrsD! Our venue comes with a couple bathrooms in a trailer, they look really nice!

Yeah personally I would go with the nice trailers you can rent. But I have never priced those. If you do let people in the house, make sure you are prepared for people to not take their shoes off. So you may want a rug or runner or something to not trash your floor! And I would definitely have someone in charge to do a quick sweep through for garbage and Extra TP.
