Backyard Fall Wedding Food?

Cindy, on July 15, 2019 at 12:29 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 7

My fiance and I are paying for the wedding, so we're trying to stick to a budget. Our wedding will be on an 11 acre AirBnb property out in the mountains. Wedding is in October. Think yard games, dancing, open bar, campfire w/s'mores station, and 50-75 people. Business casual to cocktail is dress code.

Our first thought was because it's going to be somewhat casual, we self-cater and grill up hot dogs, hamburgers, and do a cookout buffet. Now I'm wondering if this will be 1) too messy for guests and 2) too cheap/classless for those attending.

Thoughts? Ideas on alternatives for a relatively inexpensive fall menu, or ways to class up the campout theme? Thanks!

I'm doing a similar, casual wedding! We're doing a taco bar, mostly because me and FH LOVE tacos!! This is definitely budget-friendly because we will be doing everything ourselves in bulk from COSTCO and Sams Club. I would love a laid back hot dog and hamburger, but if you're looking for a "higher class" budget-friendly option, italian might work too! Different pastas, lasagnas, etc.

Catered BBQ? Chicken, BBQ pork and side dishes that need forks & knives instead of fingers? Should still be cheap but let the pros use the BBQ and their own equipment & staff while you & family enjoy your wedding.

I would be cautious about trying to do it all yourselves. You want to enjoy your day and if you have friends volunteer to help they won’t enjoy it either and you will be worried about things getting done. I like the idea of catering a BBQ or finding a local restaurant that will cater a casual meal for you.

I'd say hotdogs and burgers would be more for a casual wedding, not cocktail. If you do it yourself, someone is stuck with maning the grill/food station etc. and can't enjoy the party. It will also be hard for everyone to eat at the same time without food getting cold. Because you have a smaller guest list, you can easily get a relatively inexpensive caterer!

Self-catering is just hard on family/friends. They are the ones closest to the couple and don't get to experience the day with them.

Consider BBQ from your local restaurant! It won't cost an arm and a leg and it should work well for a backyard wedding!

Check out your local restaurants or food trucks. If you can avoid it do not cook yourselves have someone else do it.

I wouldn’t want to be stuck having to grill all night or to ask a guest to do it. The cookout food would be fine, but you should make sure the execution is done by someone not involved or invited to the wedding. I also love the food truck idea someone else mentioned!
