Backyard BBQ reception dress code

I've never been to a backyard wedding...for me I have an idea of what I'm going to wear but what about hubby? What would you expect your DH/FH to wear to your best friends back yard reception? Hubby just wants to wear cargo shorts and a button up Hawaiin shirt with sandals...appropriate? Yes or no?

I told everyone to dress casually in shorts and tees for our backyard BBQ wedding and people wore sundresses and short sleeve button downs and shorts! LOL! I think he'll be fine. Those of us who have backyard BBQ weddings don't stress about how our guests will dress. ;-)

Probably shorts and a polo or short sleeve button up. He wouldn't wear sandals ever but he'd wear sneakers.

I'd probably be in a skirt if I thought it was going to be hot- other than the gym and Walmart I never really dress that casually.
I'm not proud. if I'm not sure what to wear I just ask someone what they expect people to wear and ask for suggestions. has always worked for me!

I would wear a sundress or maxi dress with either wedges or nice sandals. FH would wear a polo and khaki shorts or a button down (no tie) and khaki shorts with boat shoes - no sneakers and no sandals.

ETA: is he serious? A Hawaiian shirt is never appropriate.
