Backless dress to big?

Sara, on May 25, 2022 at 12:48 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 10
Hi all. I just went for my alterations. The upper part of my dress near my boobs is legit waaaayy too big. It’s bulky. I really don’t like the way it looks on me. We’re trying cups first to see if it helps but she told me she can’t take it in unless we make a strap across the back, since it’s backless.

So I was thinking, maybe I could taper the sides in by the boob with double sided fashion tape? This is my dress and like there’s really an entire inch between where my body is and the upper part of solid fabric is. My boobs really aren’t that big and it just makes me look “bigger” than I really am. Backless dress to big? 1

Can your seamstress not fix it?

Get a consultation with a different seamstress. If she is saying it can’t be done without changing the entire dress, she is basically letting you know that her skill set is inadequate for the work needed.

Ugh, I already paid them Smiley sad. I know they aren’t going to give me that money back as they already pinned the dress too. I do want to take it to someone else but I have a feeling they’re going to give me hell.

Definitely get a second opinion from a different seamstress. Even if the dress is backless there are still ways to fit the top, and if there arent they needed to have been honest with you when you tried it on and purchased the size you did.

I don't think tape or cups will help. That dress has large, structured cups. I'm sure it's a pain to trim those cups down, there must be a way to do it. The hassle of a second opinion will be worth it.

I disagree with your seamstress. I do not have the language to articulate this correctly but my seamstress fixed my dress which had a similar situation I believe it had something to do with taking it in from the sides and top. I’m not describing this correctly but I dropped a cup size since I bought the gown and she worked her magic on what appeared to be a hopeless situation.

I'd definitely get a second opinion. Even just reaching out with pictures, an explanation of what you're looking for, and asking if they think they'd be able to help. I'm nowhere close to a seamstress, but I feel like SOMETHING should be able to be done to make your dress fit better. You can either be uncomfortable now by telling your current seamstress you're going someplace else or be uncomfortable on your wedding day and whenever you look at pictures.

I had given a deposit to a seamstress and then decided to look elsewhere. Luckily she had pinned my dress but didn’t start cutting/sewing. She gave me all of my money back.

My cups were too big and She basically wanted to cut it in the front and out a seam on the chest area. I thought that was absurd.

I went to a new seamstress and she took it in at the sides and back. She was more expensive though.

I know yours is backless but I would definitely take it somewhere else. Try to get your money back, especially if they didn’t touch your dress yet. If you have to lose your money, then you might have to cut your losses.

    Goooood luck!

I don’t know your financial situation but I’d rather eat the amount I paid them and take it somewhere else than have a dress I don’t like
