Back from Davids Bridal Alterations... HA!!

Stacy, on February 25, 2012 at 6:41 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 12

Wow.. Was I surprised!! Good & Bad..

The good part is I get the corset that I originally wanted, infact its cheaper alter it from the back at the zipper then to adjust the sides because of the the beading, they would have to take it out & then redo each bead.. Ive had several people tell me I can go other places & get it done for cheaper. so I'm gonna call around.

so here is what they quoted me.. Does that sound right?

I only paid $200 for the dress, so paying more forr alterations is a lil extreme to me?

Corset back $175

Bustle (over) $35

Hem $120

I would call around...but the only thing with that is if DB does something to mess up the dress they fix it or replace the dress. I was in the same boat 4 years ago with them paid $60 for a dress then paid $120 for the alterations

That is their standard pricing for those alterations. Check out private seamstresses in your area - and ask if they are insured!

I paid $65 for my hem and $60 for my bustle thru a smaller boutique in my area, call around if you like, but sometimes that is not always the best thing to do. Good luck!

Wow - I'm having mine done at DB too and my corset back is only $140 and the hem is $20. That's insane to me

Honestly I have heard the that DB is high when it comes to alterations but I really don't think they are to bad. I was quoted

Bustle $35 or french bustle $50

    Sewing in pads (Free)

pretty darn good to me. I guess it depends on what you need done. Thankfully that's all I need.

As a former employee of David's Bridal I highly highly stress not to go to a private seamstress. I know the price is high but if the alterations department messes it up at David's they replace the dress for free and do the alterations for free. If you take it to a private seamstress and then bring it in for your free steaming David's can't touch it. No matter how much you beg and plead they won't take it. It's a liability thing. I know the price is high but it is worth it just in case something goes wrong.

Now as a Bride, I totally understand the hesitation about the price. But like I said above it is a gamble that is more likely to be done right and will be replaced if done wrong, whereas going to a private seamstress they can't do anything if they mess up the alterations.

I went to a professional seamstress & paid $80 for the bust area & sides. I am very happy with the job. Look around. DB is too expensive.

Bustle sounds right... hem sounds too high. My dress has layers and they are charging me $75 for my hem.

I'm getting mine done at David's...here's my prices:

    Bra cups = $20

Hem = $120 (more because I have a flap at the bottom of my dress that will make it harder)

    Bustle (under) = $50

    Corset back = $115

    Total = $305

My dress was only $99, so I hear you about paying more for alterations, but I just look at it from the perspective that my total dress budget was $500, so I'm still under!

I would go with David's...like others said if anything goes wrong they assume the liability. I had my alterations yesterday and I paid $260.(and paid $1200 for my dress)..$150 for the hem, $60 to take it in on the sides, $50 for the bustle. I think prices may vary depending on where you live too. While I was there several consultants came to ask the prices of hems on certain dresses and it seemed as if $150 was about standard.

After seeing the responses, I think i'm gonna stick with Davids for the corset atleast they'll clean & press it, but maybe find someone to hem it... I need a good couple inches taken off, but theres no other layers or anything else, just a simple bottom with no detail. Thanks everyone for your help.
