Awful MOH Speeches

NikNak, on December 4, 2016 at 3:19 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 21

Tonight I began a part-time job as a banquet server at a local venue.  I figured that it would be a great way to do some research on my own planning - get some ideas and also making money toward our budget.  It has definitely already proven fruitful, but I have to speak on something awful I witnessed tonight.

While the wedding two hundred guests was fully hosted - a full open bar, a ton of food, even a Viennese hour, I watched sadly, as be two Maid's of honor spoke about their bride. The bride being their sister.  Their speech consisted of talking about how this bride as a kid talked about "bagging herself a rich man."

The cringing faces at the tables I was covering and the silence around the room was enough.  I honestly wanted to race this girl out of the room because you can see on every face how awful they felt and unfortunately, this speech went on for almost 10 minutes.  The bride looked like she wanted to cry!

Thankfully, the best man speech managed to bring everyone back as he spoke kind things about his brother and new sister in law - he had people laughing and everything.

    What a night!

    Wow that's bad!!

At our friends wedding the MOH (brides sister) talked about their dead baby sister in her speech. It was super morbid and uncomfortable. The groom was on fb on his phone during half.

We were at a wedding where the bride, who was drunk, interrupted the FOG's speech about how she wanted babies (something she mentions frequently when drunk.) the also drunk FOG said "if the groom is anything like me, he's really fertile." Everyone at our table just looked at each other silently. It was one of the most awkward moments of my life.

One of my really good friends was a banquet server at a 5 star resort and said that the Best Man utilized his speech time to tell the groom that his wife had been cheating on him! :-0

At a wedding I recently attended, the mother of the bride used her speech to speak about inside jokes between her and her daughter--in the form of handing her groceries. I.E. "Here's an empty box of Captain Crunch because you always put back the empty cereal box in the pantry." It was long and incredibly awkward in my opinion. That was the MOB's gifts to the couple btw--some half-eaten groceries.

Haha @MzRosaLu... There were so many! One of the other parts I remember is when the first sister who thanked the bride and groom for getting married so that everyone could get drunk and party... Not a congratulations, we've witnessed such a beautiful love, but you're our excuse for getting drunk... awkward... ETA: Spelling

I too have seen so many horrifying speeches...personally, I'd either do away with them or demand full editorial control. Or have a secret signal to the DJ to cut the mic if it gets weird.

One of my close friends got married last year and they put all of the bridesmaids/groomsmen on the spot and every single one of them gave a speech.... the only person who initially was supposed to give a speech was the MOH. All of these grown ass adults were going on about how they haven't always gotten along, used to hate each other, never thought the bride and groom would actually tie the knot etc. they all legitimately thought the speech was supposed to be about them and their relationship with the bride/groom as opposed to a speech about the couple. Awkward af.

Urgh, some people are so damn tacky. It really isn't hard to google "speech etiquette" and for just one night, put someone else's feelings before your own.

I went to one where the best man was quite clearly a f**king idiot. His speech for the groom was terrible. So many awkward looks around the room. He told 100 people about how the groom (who was marrying Best mans Mum) got diarrhoea and used a sock for toilet paper and how he had walked in on his mum and the groom - "so I know you make her happy" - urgh.. I'm getting sympathy cringe just thinking about it.

If there were ever an advertisement for a DOC, this would be it: "We will require that all speeches are submitted to us prior to the wedding. If they aren't, they will not be spoken through a microphone." And then mean it! This is hideous. Dead baby sisters, diarrhea emergencies requiring socks, half eaten groceries? Good God...look at the couple! She's in a four figure, white gown and he's in a tux!!! The wedding is about making them look their absolute best...not dredging up the shit that leads people into a therapist's office.

At my cousin's wedding (the groom), the MOH was the bride's sister. She went on for 15 minutes. 5 about growing up with her sister/inside jokes. 5 about all the bride's failed online dates/thinking the groom was a creep at first. 5 awkwardly crying about how the groom was stealing her sister and he could never love her as much as she did.

At my MOH's wedding, her mother grabbed the mic after the FOB speech was done. She went on for 10 minutes about herself/her friends and how her daughters wedding was her accomplishment. The BP all make eye contact and silently started a drinking game to make it through the awkward.
