I have been looking around for a Dj and MC. I was wondering what is the average cost anyone has paid for one? I am located in Central NJ

Where are you? It can vary a ton based on location. In CT we are paying $1300 with a large discount because I have hired him before for work events. His full price is $1800. That is for 6 hours with microphones and speakers for the outside ceremony.

I'm in NJ and was quoted $1050 for 4 hours which at first I thought was a lot until I was quoted $2500 after a 50% off rate due to a bridal show and I "won" free cocktail hour music. Thanks, but no thanks. Their normal price was like $5,500. I'm sure they're great, but they will not be hired by me, I'll leave them to the Rumson brides (no offense to any Rumson brides!) I would say from my research that in NJ anywhere from $1,000-2200 is a going rate. Then there are uplighting and photo booth add ons if you want them, I'm opting out of that stuff.

I'm paying $750 for the ceremony and 5 hours of reception, that includes 2 sets of equipment, wireless mic, emcee duties, and a "reception planner". He knocked off 300$ for booking him so early. (located in nashville)

I'm a DJ in Reno, NV and I keep my prices lower than most of my competition. This is mostly because a lot of these guys bought a ton of equipment on credit and they're making payments still. I own all my gear and have my prices on my website (www.RenoWeddingDJ.com). $150/hr for four hours and $100/hr over that for reception and an extra $100 for two set-ups (for ceremony).

Be very careful about who you hire for your wedding DJ. Shopping by price can be very dangerous and as you interview DJs you will hear things like "I charge less because I didn't put my equipment on credit" or "I do this part time so I can afford to give you a better deal" when in all reality the truth is if they were worth it and thought they could get it, they would charge it.

Instead a better way to approach hiring your DJ would be like hiring someone for your company. But here you are hiring someone for your wedding company. Look at their training and experience, look for references and social proof (video and written testimonials) that confirm that they make their clients happy. Once you identify the candidates you want to talk with, arrange your interviews. Do it in person too so you can see them and their mannerism, do they have an office or are they working out of an apartment or home? Are you meeting at starbucks and are you comfortable with that? Ask them questions about what they do and how they do it, ask them about their experience at your venue and how they get along with other vendors and then narrow it down to the DJ companies you really like and feel comfortable with. Then start talking price.

You will need to understand that the better they are and the more in demand they are, the more expensive they will be to an extent. Just like at your work, the great employees with tenure and proven performance get paid more than the new employees who have not yet proven themselves. So understand you get what you pay for. If you did your research and followed what I said above, you should be able to find the perfect DJ for your wedding that will leave you worry free and extremely happy on your wedding day.

Any additional questions about the process, feel free to contact me. I would be more than happy to help. http://www.BestWeddingDJEver.com. Best wishes for your special day!

When considering how much your DJ will cost, if you are looking just at how many hours your wedding is, the cost may seem alot.

But you must also consider many other factors that go into what a professional charges and why:

    1) Years of experience, talent and reputation

    2) Consultations and preparations

    3) Pro sound & lighting equipment for a basic set up on average can cost $ 4000.

That doesnt include a legal music library and the ongoing cost of music and maintenance

    4) Time to load in, set up equipment and do proper sound checks and light placement Time to break

    down and load out.

    4) Liability Insurance - Any reputable DJ will carry it and more facilities are requiring it.

    5) Cost to do business - Advertising, Sales, Office expenses etc.

How much you decide to spend on the many different aspects of your big day all depends on what is priority for you and your spouse. Pick your top three priorities and allocate a little extra money for them ( e.g. gown, catering, band/dj ). Next pick three that are your lowest in priority (eg flowers, cake, invitations, favors, seat covers ) and budget accordingly.

If entertainment & event direction generally making up 75% of the overall success of a wedding. It is not unreasonable to spend just 5% of your budget. National avg cost of a wedding is approx $ 26,000. 5% = $ 1,300
