Average cost to get a bustle added?

kelly, on August 29, 2015 at 10:55 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 15

So when I picked up my dress from David's Bridal I was never told I needed to get a bustle added to my dress. After having it for a month or so I'm realizing I am definitely going to need one. I was wondering the average cost/ how to find a good tailor because I don't want to trust just anyone. (I included a picture of it so you can zoom in to see more of the back to have an idea)

I think DB charges for how many times they need to pull up the fabric...like mine is a ballgown with a tulle skirt, so they need to do a lot with it. It ended up costing me about 200 total i think with the hem. Sorry, not sure how much the bustle alone costed.

ETA: the price will vary at DB at least depending on your dress.

$50 for the first three points, $7 per point after that. Ex: a 5 point bustle would be 50+14= 64

You're welcome Smiley smile The only thing I'll say otherwise about the bustle is that no one is going to know how many points you will need until you get to a fitting (that's a question I get a lot lol)

Does the bustle depend on the fabric/type of gown/ fit in general? My gown fit me like a glove off the rack so the only alteration I would need is maybe a slight hem but even then I don't think it's that much of an issue if I got a slightly higher shoe to fix that problem.

@AprilG, what's the average cost for fixing straps and shorten the dress. I want to have an idea of how much money I will spend. Thanks in advance.

@Kelly; no it does not depend on fabric or anything. There are three that we do that a seamstress can explain when you go to the appointment, an American bustle, a French, and a Ballroom. Those are the typical three, and I can see at least two of those working with yours

@DRGCAS depends on what kind of straps really. If they have a lot of embellishment or are made of lace, the price is a little higher. As for hemming the dress, range is generally $120-$150. The 150 is for couture level hemming, meaning if your dress has a lot of stuff at the bottom or over 5 layers

I'm having a 5 point bustle and it's costing me $30. My seamstress is doing A LOT of work to my dress and didn't charge me for most of it. Like fixing the loose beading or securing the tufts that have come undone... Love love LOVE my seamstress!

Thanks, @AprilG! It's nice to have an idea of how much I'm going to pay and how charges are determined.

@April G. you mentioned you work at DB in alteration right? Well today I had alterations look over my gown to give me a quote for the bustles. She mentioned I needed 5 points so it would cost me between $150-$175.....now that is definately a big difference from the $64 you mentioned. Any suggestions since you work for this company?
