August 2019, Nyc, just got engaged

Rebecca, on January 5, 2019 at 10:28 PM Posted in New York Planning 0 6

Hi NYC brides!

I just got engaged and we're hoping to do this super fast and get married this summer. We're confined to NYC because FH's home parish is on the UWS. (He's Catholic.)

I'm balanced between overwhelmed and ready to do this (I canceled a half-planned wedding 8 years ago, to get out of a bad relationship), so I'm kind of spinning emotionally.

We just put together our pencil guest list, and it's looking like we'll be a fairly small wedding (<150, including kiddos). I'd appreciate any and all advice you might have for NYC weddings. Including how feasible you think it might be to herd all our guests from point to point in NYC or even back across to Jersey City (where we live) to get a good venue.

(Oh, I'm totally going to the Kleinfeld's pop up sale this Tuesday, because designer dresses on sale for <$900??? Seems like an opportunity I should not pass up.)

Thanks!

Rebecca

    Thank you!

We got engaged at our friends' place during a NYE party. There's a game we play every time, including hidden gifts, blindfolds, and startling the poor dog (...every time. she never remembers from one person to the next, poor baby). He arranged for me to go last, so at least 3 people got it on video (I cannot, for the life of me, get it to upload here).

I wasn't at all surprised, and yet I was. We'd been talking about this for a while, and he got more-than-Christmas-mysterious over the course of December, so I couldn't figure out if he would propose NYE or later. I cried, and also laughed. (I'd also disconcerted all our friends there, by asking them if he would propose that night. He'd just been SO antsy!)

He *nearly* did delay - the ring he'd ordered got delayed, but some other friends of ours loaned him a ring. They just had a baby boy, so excellent karma! My ring came on January 2nd, so I didn't even have to wear the loaner 2 full days.

Now I'm trying to get info on venues and budgets and kind of everything at once. It's all a bit much!

    Congrats!

I would suggest coming up with a hefty budget first and figuring out who you absolutely want to attend. I have a HUGE family and he doesn't so I had to make a lot of cuts. After that, I had a number to work with. This will create a clear set of yes/no for places you start scoping out. You will find that some places have minimums so you X those off and move on seamlessly. I'm not from the NYC area but we are having it down there and quickly found that it was better for us to get a planner to email, visit, and set up meetings for us. That is totally up to you. We are a couple of hours away so it balanced out.

We got married in Paramus/Garfield, NJ while living in Brooklyn (Williamsburg), my parents live in NJ, his in Queens and we took pics in Jersey City, so lots of travel but doable. Plan a realistic timeline and give yourself enough time for travel, considering potential traffic. Also would suggest talking it though with your vendors (photo/video). If you end up running late, it will cut into their time. I know Marcin @ Charming Images is great with this stuff, wants to make sure there is enough time for great photos.

Hi, I got engaged over the holidays and am planning an August wedding too. We booked our venue about 2 weeks ago and just sent out save the dates (we did paperless post). Slowly but surely moving along!
