attire for fathers of bride and groom

kathy, on September 10, 2009 at 10:52 AM Posted in Planning 0 14

I was wondering what our father's should wear at the wedding. My dad will be giving me away, but has a limited income and my ffil has the means for whatever we decide, but I don't want him to wear a tux and "out dress" my dad. The groomsmen and probably ushers will be wearing tuxes. What should I do?

Good question I was wondering this too? Any advice? I was thinking that if my dad is walking me down the aisle he should wear a tux but don't know what the tradition is...

I would say tuxes. Perhaps if your dad doesn't have the funds you can help him out. If you can't help him out and he can't afford it then no tux because you don't want him over extending himself trying to pay for it.

Our groomsmen are wearing brown tuxes with ties/vests. My father isn't coming to the wedding but my son is walking me down the aisle in the same tux (rip off - he's 11 and it's the same price as a man's!) The fathers of the groom (step-dad and dad) and grandpas are all wearing dockers, shirts and ties in the wedding colors. At men's wearhouse if you don't rent the jacket and just rent the pants, shoes, tie, shirt, and cuff links it's only $50!! We did that for my nephew because it's cheaper than buying.

The groom and all the GM are wearing tuxes but my dad (who is walking me down the aisle) is wearing a nice black suit. I gave my dad the option of renting a tux or just wearing his suit. I think as long as he's dressed up it's not going to matter if he's wearing a tux or not. The tux is a little more formal but I know my dad's black suit will be just as nice.

Many places give a free tux after renting 4 or 5. Maybe designate that your Dad has the free tux. Unless your FFIL is in the wedding party (i.e., standing up next to his son during the wedding) he doesn't need to wear anything more than a suit and shouldn't be more dressed up than your dad.

No, ffil is not in the wedding, so maybe I will have my dad rent a tux. He lives in VA and maybe it will be cheaper to rent one down there. He may end up spending the same amount anyway to buy as to rent. IDK if he has a nice black suit at home that he can use for the wedding.I'll have to find out.

We chose the same rental tux for both fathers. However the vest/tie combination is different from anyone else. The dad's will have black vest/tie and the groom's men latte. Southerngirl is right, I know for a fact Men's Warehouse does a free rental if you have 4 or 5 other tux rentals. You can give the free rental to whoever you want, give it to your dad.

I echo southerngirl. Call around to tuxedo places, because many of them offer a free tux after a certain number of rentals. For instance our men are renting from Men's Warehouse and because we have so many people renting, we actually got two free tuxes. This came in handy for folks who are low on funds - times are hard. Good luck!

The tuxes will come from Men's Warehouse because David's Bridal works with them to coordinate the colors of the dresses with the vests etc. Like I said, we still haven't checked out what the exact price will be, so the free rental is a great option!

If you ladies would like a ballpark on tux rentals, we went this weekend and set everything up. We chose a Calvin Klein tux and it is going to be around $165 per rental. This includes the tux, shirt, vest, tie, shoes, and fittings. They have other brands that run lower in price, we chose this one because it is the lightest weight fabric they offer. We joined the Men's Wearhouse savings club ( I can't remember the actual name of the club ). It's free and anyone who rents a tux gets a $20 gift card to use. So the $165 was with the applied gift card. Hope this helps.

Alot of time if you get so many tux's you can rent one free. maybe see if the shop has this deal?

my dad wore the same tux as the grooms men, but my FIL wore his own, he couldnt afford the other one, but he wasnt walking me down or anything and my FIL's tux kinda matched the others

My dad is actually wearing his own suit. He's had if for years. It's still nice and he's got a plain white shirt underneith and a tie that matches my colors. He didn't have the funds either to pay, I'm not picky so this is fine. MY FIL is renting a suit, but he's old school so his suit looks kind of like a zuit suit...LOl. But the rest of the groomsmen are in tux's. I think the fathers should be different since they are not actually in the wedding party, plus suits are cheaper and can be worn again if they want to buy their own. Where as a tux you might wear twice at the most.

My father has passed away. My FIL will be asked to wear a tux. My FH wants any bridal party member and his father to be in Tuxes. I will probally buy my youngest son one. At age 4 we might find one online cheaper than renting.

I know at mens wearhouse, they allow you to rent a tux in one city and return it in another...we thought about doing that for my dad since he lives in IL and will be coming to NM for my wedding.
