Attire for Father of the Bride and Groom

GrumpyCatRebecca, on February 14, 2016 at 1:07 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 10

I was talking wedding planning with my mom the other day and she mentioned something about making sure my dad got the info about the attire for the groomsmen. Apparently she is under the impression that the fathers of the bride and groom should be dressed in the same tux/suit as the groom and groomsman. This is the first I'd heard of this, but i have to confess I've never paid much attention to what the parents were wearing at weddings. I was expecting them to just wear a suit and had no intention of asking them to buy a new suit just for my wedding (the groom and his men will be in suits rather than tuxes). However, I also don't want them to feel snubbed. Help! What's "standard" here? Does it depend on how formal the wedding is supposed to be?

I don't know about what is "standard" but since my Father and FFIL care nothing about appearance, we included them with the suit rental.

Knowing my dad, he would have shown up in a 25 year old suit, looking like a stuffed sausage because he was too cheap to buy a new one. FFIL would show up in Jeans and a tshirt because he'd want to be comfortable. So we rented suits for them, crisis averted.

They definitely don't have to match the GM. I find it weird when they do actually - it's too matchy-matchy and looks dated. Our fathers had their own suits which look far better than rentals anyway.

They should probably be included in the suit or tux rental but it doesn't need to be the same suit as the groomsmen.

I left it up to my father and FIL. My father wore a suit he had and FIL (who officiated) rent a suit from the same place the groom and his party got their suits from. I don't think it matters all that much, more of a personal choice.

The dads are wearing their suit of choice. FMIL made FFIL buy a new suit to match the colors of the GM because she cannot believe I dont want everyone to match...."what about the pictures?!?" Ugh, not the hill I want to die on....

We are including the fathers in the tux rental but the groomsmen are wearing light gray and the fathers are wearing dark gray so they kind of go with the bridal party but don't match exactly.

They do not need to match the GM. That being said, usually if the GM and groom are in tuxes, the fathers also wear tuxes. Basicly, they should match the formality of the bridal party (just like MOB and MOG should match the formality of the wedding) but they don't need to actually MATCH, if that makes sense.

FFIL is a groomsman, so he will be wearing the same rental tux. My dad owns several suits and will just wear one of those.

Ours are included in the rental, but they're wearing khaki summer suits instead of the navy linen FH and the best man are.
