Assigned Seating: Sign vs Place Cards?

Mallory , on January 11, 2017 at 10:03 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 1 8

So we've had a lot more people RSVP yes to our wedding than we expected so it looks like we are going to have to assign people tables for dinner. I've never been to a wedding with assigned tables so I have no reference. Are people using signs or place cards for assigning tables? Which work better?

Every wedding over 20 guests should assign tables.

Either one works fine; do them in alphabetical order.

I've seen both. I like the place cards because it just feels so much more personal for the guest. The sign worked well too, but I liked being able to carry my card with me to my table. I still haven't quite decided how we are going to do it yet, but I'm leaning towards place cards.

I found some place cards that actually double as favor boxes that we're going to fill with candy

I will be doing both a sign when my guests enter the room and place cards at each seat. Our venue requires each place card to be coded somehow so that they can serve the dinners without asking each guest what they ordered. So we kind of have to do both to ensure the place cards will be on the table and guest won't have to wonder around looking for their seat.

If you do a sign, please make sure it is organized alphabetically, not by table number. It takes forever for someone to find their name when it is under a table number instead of alphabetically.

The decorative signs I've seen are always broken down by table, and that, in my opinion, causes a major traffic jam and a slow transition from cocktail hour to dinner. The alphabetized cards are a much better option.

You can do both. I think for smaller-ish weddings a sign is good, but I prefer place cards myself. It's easier to remember where I'm sitting when I'm buzzed from cocktail hour if I have my table number in my hand.

We are doing a sign. We have 2 levels and a sign makes it easier to move from one place to another.
