Assigned seating for 36-40 guests?

Kimberly, on October 21, 2020 at 12:07 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 11
I’m pretty sure I know the answer to this, but I’m going to ask.... do I need assigned seating at my small, 40 person (probably more like 36 person), short, grazing table/heavy hors d’oeuvres wedding?
We have the venue for 3 hours, set up 30 minutes, ceremony 20-30 minutes, grazing tables opened while we take pictures and then we will join guests for remainder of reception. Do we need to assign seats? And if we do, what’s the best way to do that for such a small group?
Place cards on the tables? Place cards with table number only at the entrance? Tables are 6’ long tables and there will be 4 or 5 depending on our final count.

For appetizers only, you do not need assigned seating as it defeats the purpose. But you can have placecards without assignments..just names..if you wish to provide guests with a home base for purses, coats, etc. However tables and chairs for every person are required. Some people will sit, some will stand.

If you do placecards, have a table near the entrance with them listed alphabetically.

With that small of a group, you probably dont have to especially if they all mostly know each other. But personally I like when events have seating charts, it just saves a lot of scrambling for chairs and trying to sit with people you actually talk to haha. You can do it just like at a normal wedding with place cards or a sign with everyones name and table number on it

I would say no. That small of a group, and I'm assuming you all know one another well, seating charts are not necessary! If you're worried whether people will know how to seat themselves of not, then just do a table seating chart, and skip assigned seats.

With just a grazing table with appetizers, I would not worry with assigned seats/tables. People will likely not be seated for long for heavy hors d’oeuvres. If you do decide to do assignments, I would suggest table assignments rather than seat assignments. They are easier!

We didn't have assigned seating for our group of 35. We found it much easier to just let them sit where they all wanted.

It is two separate families and friend groups, but a small group. That’s why I’m struggling to decide if we should assign tables. I’m leaving more on the assign tables, but it does seem like overkill for 4 or 5 tables. 😏

This is true. I doubt people will be sitting for long.

And you didn’t have any issues with people confused as to where to sit?

Not at all. We had high tops and tables for seating. People flock to comfort, in times of Covid its best to leave it that way. We didn’t even have assigned seating for ourselves.

I think they can seat themselves with that small of a group.
