Asking step-dad to walk me down the aisle...need some ideas.

*Rachel*, on January 26, 2015 at 9:11 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 5

I have decided to ask my step-dad to walk me down the aisle. I hadn't really given it much thought at first and had actually figured I would just walk by myself...until my mom got to me. Not in a bad way like how some moms can be when it comes to weddings, but she brought up the fact that my step-dad probably won't get another chance to do it. His real daughter died in a car accident about 10 years ago and my sister has already made it clear that if she ever gets married, she is going to elope. So that leaves me. My mom really seems to think that it will mean a lot to him. So I would really like to make it special. My step-dad came into our lives when I was about 16 and we have definitely had our ups and downs, but he has been more of a dad to my sister and I than our real dad.

I have looked online to try to get some ideas, but everything is just so mushy. We don't have that kind of a relationship. Any ideas on what I could do or how to ask without it being super mushy? Thanks!

If you don't want it to be too mushy, I would just do a straight forward phone call. Call up the house and talk to your mom for a few minutes, then say "Can I talk to stepdad a sec?" Then be honest and up front and let him take it from there. Good luck!

Hi - I think if you don't want it to be super mushy between you two then make it more about your future husband. Visit Etsy - https://www.etsy.com/listing/161302443/i-have-loved-you-for-so-many-days-card?ref=sr_gallery_1&ga_search_query=i+have+loved+you+for&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery. These can be customized to say something like. I have loved my future husband for [fill in the blank] days and it would be a honor to have you walk me down the aisle. If nothing else, this would be a cute note to send to your future husband the day of your wedding.

Not sure if you knew his deceased daughter, but here's a thought (might just add to the mush) they have these mini picture frames you add to your bouquet stem (where you hold at the bottom), they are very small and cheap order one, put small picture of his daughter in it (both my dad's parents died and I was very close to them so I will have this on my bouquet for my dad so he will know his parents are still in our memory). That way you can ask him to walk you and show him symbolically hes getting to walk his real daughter two. It would be a special memory for the two of you if you decide to do it.
