Asking hair stylist to be a bridesmaid?

Kristie, on August 1, 2016 at 3:44 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 10

Over the last year or so I have become pretty close friends with my hair stylist who is also a long-time close friend of my fiance (they're like brother and sister). We've talked before about her doing the hair and makeup for my wedding - and it was never a question that she and her husband would be guests as well. My fiance decided he'd really like to have 6 groomsmen (narrowed down from his original idea of 9! yikes!). That leaves me having to select two more bridesmaids to even up. I would absolutely love to have my hair stylist be one of my bridesmaids, but would it be too much to ask her to do that if I've already told her I planned to hire her for our hair and makeup? When it comes down to it, if I had to pick one or the other for her, I'd prefer to have her as a bridesmaid and she could hook us up with friends of hers to do our hair.

I have not officially booked her for hair and makeup, and I have not formally asked any bridesmaids yet.

Don't have her be both your BM and your stylist for the day. But you know your sides don't have to be even, right?

Pick her as a BM, and get a different MUA (even if she offers, get someone else).

Your wedding is on a holiday (albeit not usually a 'work off' holiday) so I would start looking for a MUA a touch earlier than usually too, but you can wait to ask your BMs.

ETA: And don't forget about parades/travel times. There are always so many parades on 11/11. lol.

I know they don't have to be, but my fiance and I would like them to be even.

AMW - Good Call! I totally would not have thought about that since I've never paid attention to that. I'll look that up! Thanks!

Sides don't have to be even. If you want her as a part of your wedding party I would choose someone else to do your hair and makeup. It's not fair to have her work on your wedding day when she should be enjoying the day with you

@Kristie I only know because it's my birthday, and every single year I forget there are parades, the post office and banks are closed, and even worse, the liquor store is closed.

You think I would remember it but nope, every year, a surprise to me lol.

I'm extremely close with my hair stylist too! I've been going to her since I graduated from the 8th grade (she had just finished cosmetology school). She's been there for every high and low of our relationship. I couldn't just have her as a BM, I mad her my Matron of Honor. We just recently started discussing my hair. Because my wedding is in the evening, she thinks she can still do my hair and be available in our suite at the hotel, should any of the other girls need her help. Her sister is also a beautician (they own a shop together, two of the best stylist in CT). I'm totally fine going to her sister instead and think that would be best. So I say all that to say, I think it would be best if you asked someone else. That's a lot of responsibility to put on someone.

Are you asking her because you truly want her to stand beside you or because you want to have even sides?

I truly want her up there with me. The thought had crossed my mind before, I just wasn't sure I wanted more than 4 when we initially talked about it. Sounds like the general consensus is to go with one or the other, and in that case I definitely want her up there with me and will consider alternatives for hair and makeup.

Thank you all for the input! Definitely helped me make a clear decision! Smiley smile

Do you hang out with her outside the salon?
