Asking for the receipt to return a gift?

Kelly, on July 27, 2016 at 2:44 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 14

I looked through some discussions but couldn't find an answer as my situation is a little specific...

My mom bought us a brand new Dyson vacuum a year before our wedding as an early wedding gift since our old one stopped working. I was going to put a vacuum on our registry, but didn't need to after my mom got one for us. My husband's aunt and her family gifted us with an expensive vacuum (different brand) for our wedding and did not include a gift receipt. Obviously I do not need 2 vacuums, but they didn't know we just got a new one last year.

Basically, I wanted to know if it was tacky or rude to ask his aunt for the receipt so we can return her vacuum for another item on our registry. The store she bought it from will not accept a return without the receipt. How would you approach her and ask? My husband feels guilty and doesn't want to hurt her feelings.

I agree that most stores allow an exchange or store credit at the current selling price for unused, unopened merchandise with no original or gift receipt.

I would sell it online before I asked for the receipt! You don't want to be rude or offend family.

It's rude to ask. Go to the place where she got it from your registry and they should be able to give you store credit.

Try for a store credit. But under no circumstances do you ask a group of people who orchestrated an expensive gift for a receipt.

Your first vacuum will break. Trust me.

Thanks everyone, I never know what to do in these situations. I know if I was her I wouldn't be offended if someone asked me for the receipt, but that's me Smiley tongue

I looked online and their policy states "no returns without orginal receipt". We don't live close to the store, so we have not asked about a store credit yet. We will ask for a store credit and hopefully when she eventually finds out we returned it (you know she will ask how it's working the next time we see her) she won't be too upset.

You don't ever need to tell her your returned it..... she isn't going to be looking in the closet. Just an oh the vacuum works great is a fine answer - and now untrue just not the vacuum she means.

Sorry, her gift was from Canadian Tire (sorta like Home Depot.. but in Canada) and our registry was at Home Outfitters.

Thank you! I noticed they do receipt-look ups the second time I looked at their site. We will try tonight and hopefully there will be no issues.

    Thanks everyone Smiley smile

Just a note---sometimes, when you return a gift item, the original purchaser is notified (there's a thread on this somewhere). So, return any gifts with caution. I'd use the standby "Oh I'm so sorry, it was broken so we had to return it" white lie if that does happen.

It's rude to ask for a receipt. Either try to return it to the store for in store credit or keep the new vacuum as a back up for when the other one breaks.
