Asking Florist for Discount/Refund

Mrsbdg, on August 1, 2017 at 6:14 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 11

Sorry for so many posts today but I'm officially in final wedding planning mode & everything is falling out of place :-(

During my consultation, my florist called her supplier & she told me she'd be able to get all of my flowers. My florist ended up calling me recently and said she would be unable to do *my* bouquet because I required king protea. She told me there was no way any supplier could get my protea and she had exhausted every avenue to source them. I adore protea so I found out FiftyFlowers can send protea to my florist. I bought them & now my florist is angry with me for "going over her head." She also said FiftyFlowers is probably scamming me & won't send them, despite multiple customer service calls , where they assure they will be sent. My florist doesn't want to discount our order, at all for the flowers because she's convinced she'll have to do a last minute substitution. The protea weren't cheap. How should I discuss this with her?

I would negotiate a partial refund that she agrees to in writing, if the protea arrive on time and she doesn't have to do a substitution. One factor to remember is that she will probably have to purchase a substitute flower to have on hand in case the protea doesn't arrive.

@muriel I sent her a substitute bouquet which included roses and eucalyptus which she said she'd already have on hand. Is it normal for florists to have a substitute for bridal bouquets? If the protea come, should I still pay her for the backup flowers?

@Jess, it is normal to have a plan B design if the suppliers of a particular flower don't have it available.

I would ask her if she would be willing to discount the price in the event that you DO receive the flowers you want. You cant really request the refund before you know if she will have to step in and save the day if you do NOT get the flowers.

If we do get the protea and they are use-able and she has the back-up roses and eucalyptus on hand, would it be unreasonable to ask for those flowers, unarranged, to be added to our wedding decor since we will have to have paid for them?

Will you need her to make your bouquet with the protea?

Use the back-up roses to decorate your cake/cake table, to present to the MOG & MOB, etc.

@Nancy I will need her to make my protea bouquet (it is just protea with eucalyptus and ribbon around the stem) If I have to pay for the backup roses I was thinking of homemaking mini bouquets for the mothers (we were going to honor the parents with something and this would work). I'd rather get the roses through Produce Junction because they would be significantly cheaper and I don't understand why she'd order back up flowers when I have a guarantee for delivery.

Now you're going to buy roses through a different supplier than she uses? Why hire a florist if you're going to go over her head and get the flowers elsewhere?

@CoffeeNColor I was just going to buy mini rose bushes for the girls from Produce Junction which are literally $2 a piece. I figured if I'm stuck with roses because she needs to have a back up I could use that instead. Also, I'm hiring a florist because I'm allergic to flowers and would rather not be the Michelin man by doing all of my own flowers.

@Jessica If she deems my protea un-useable I'm def using them on my sweetheart table. I also adore the Protea <3
