Asking a Question on RSVP cards

Leeann, on February 10, 2017 at 11:23 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 10

I've seen on some response cards a line where the bride and groom will ask "What song gets you up on he dance floor?" to help ensure they have a great playlist for their wedding. What do you think of that? Also, we're doing an ice-cream bar for dessert and I thought about asking "What's your favorite flavor of ice cream?" on the response cards so I could pick the top 3-5 flavors. Does that seem weird to you guys?

I think the song one is ok..but I would just go with generic flavors for the ice cream and they can jazz it up with toppings

Agree with Sara. Don't bother with the ice cream, you're going to get too many different responses and you probably won't be able to get everyone's favorite - then they're going to wonder why you asked in the first place.

I've seen and replied to the "You will find me on the dance floor if you play ____." I thought it was really cool! But at the reception, the DJ didn't actually play songs that the guests had written, at least none from the table I sat with.

Same here! It's a cute idea, but the wedding I went to they didn't even follow through with it and not many people danced at all the whole night. So if you do it then make sure your DJ follows through with it, so people aren't disappointed and bummed out.

I wouldn't do the ice cream question, like others said you will get such a range of responses and won't be able to accommodate all of them. As for the song one, I think it's a cute idea in theory, but logistically I don't think it works. I'm guessing part of why you hired a DJ was so that they could read the room and play music to fit the mood (slower songs during meals, upbeat songs to keep the dance party going, special songs for dances, cake cutting, etc.), and giving him/her a huge list of guest requests could make that difficult. For example, say you have 150 guests which is probably around 75 couples/households. If each RSVP card comes back with a song that's about 3 or 4 minutes long that ends up being approximately 4 hours worth of music, which is almost the entire length of your reception!

You might want to ask your DJ if she/he would take those songs into consideration or not before you put it on your RSVP card.

Song idea is great, we plan on doing it, my sister also did it.

She then took the slower songs people requested and played them during cocktail hour and dinner. The dancier songs were for after dinner. It worked out GREAT.

Instead of the ice cream question, I would recommend that you ask for any notice of nut allergens - a lot of ice cream related items have nuts or nut oil in them, or are made in factories using nut products

Thanks all! I'll skip the ice cream question. I know all of my guests well enough to know about all food allergies and diet restriction, so that's been helpful in menu planning.

The ice cream bar sounds yummy! You can always ask the song idea on your wedding website (if you have one of those). I like the song idea!
