Ask your guests what they want to drink?

Katie, on May 26, 2016 at 5:06 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 1 21

I've seen RSVP cards where people ask what their song their guests want to hear, etc. I was wondering if anyone had ever asked what type of drinks people want? All the guides I read online say to "know your crowd" when stocking your own DIY bar...and although they are friends and family that I love, I'm a bit out of touch with their current drink preferences. Is this a totally crazy idea to ask this on the RSVP card....I could (hopefully) find some funny/creative way of wording it. At least maybe we'd get more guidance on what to stock......

I'm not 100% sold on the idea so feel free to tell me if you think it's not a good one. I'm just brainstorming here....

It might be easier to do beer, wine, and a signature drink.

I like the idea, but it seems really difficult to pull off. I can imagine people requesting 100 different types of drinks, and you know being able to provide them all...

I would suggest that you just ask some of your VIPs causally in advance if you really want to know. Not only do I think it to be incredibly odd to have that on the RSVP card, logistically I am not sure it makes sense to add having to figure out what alcohol to buy or package at your venue to purchase until after you received all your RSVPs back.

I like the idea, but I'd be worried I'd have everything from a Long Island ice tea to a margarita.

With the song you can accommodate more, with the drinks, if only 4 people write down coconut rum, you're probably not going to buy coconut rum.

I didn't DIY the bar, but I'm guessing with a nice selection of beer and wine, and some basic liquors and mixers you should be fineeee.

I've seen an rsvp that did this, sorry I looked but couldn't find it. It had something like a martini glass, wine glass and a beer pint and said "I will be drinking this much". I assumed the rsvp'er would then scribble in, say, the beer glass half way to indicate they'd be drinking beer but not a lot? Not sure.

I found this. The one I originally saw was chalkboard-y and wasnt so cluttered, but you get the gist.

If your party doesn't have a lot of wine drinkers, like mine, you can opt for a few liquors. For instance we were going to have vodka, rum, whiskey, and maybe gin along with 2 beer options.

We are stocking the bar for our wedding but I can't imagine waiting till we got RSVP's back to purchase things. After much back and forth, I lost the battle for beer, wine, and signature drinks. Now we are planning to go with a light beer, IPA or stout, 2 whites, 2 reds, champagne, vodka, rum, tequila, and whiskey.

I found this helpful in my planning: http://www.theplunge.com/blog/The-Wedding-Booze-Bible-Everything-You-Need-to-Know.html

If I got an rsvp asking what I drink I wouldn't know what to put. I'd probably put wine when in reality at weddings I typically only drink wine at dinner

We're picking a few drinks and using a chalkboard to write up a menu, i also think it will help the bar tender not be so overwhelmed.

I feel your pain. We are just having a lot of a bunch of things. I have seen a bunch of calculators but this one is the best https://www.theknot.com/content/how-to-stock-the-bar-at-your-wedding

Also, we are going to Costco and ours let's you return unopened bottles. ETA: you should probably do what I'm doing because I'm Katie S. too lol

I think this is quite unnecessary and will potentially cause a headache. There are so many liquors and since you're stocking the bar I doubt you'd be able to realistically get what is needed for everyone's drinks. Imagine one person wants a Malibu bay breeze, another wants an IPA and another wants a whiskey sour. This can work with a DJ since the DJ will already have an entire library and days worth of music.

I'd be cautious with this, since people may think of it as ordering their drinks. If they put that they want strawberry frozen margaritas, will you feel like you need to provide those? I'd just go beer, wine and signature cocktails. You'll please all but the very choosy that way.

@OP where are you located? @ChocolatierKT has a great suggestion but be sure to check your state laws...in California, you can not return alcohol =/

I agree with MrsF2B. I'd be afraid guests would expect exactly what they wrote down. You'll end up needing a full bar to accommodate everyone's requests this way. Much safer to ask some family members and WP members for drink ideas.

I wouldn't. If I was going this route, I'd pick a few wines, a few beers and a couple of sig drinks and call it a day.

@Bacon Curly Gurl, thank you so much for that link! It's great.

I think check boxes for beer, wine, and signature cocktail would work better than a fill in the blank "What drink would you like?" But even that could be overly complicated.

If you're having a diy bar I think it's fair. but list options don't just let them fill in the blank

I would list options too. Decide if your doing beer-wine and liquor. Than ask people if they like light or dark beer

    Red or white wine

Giving people the option to send in drink choices sounds nice but you will receive 25 different drinks requests and a big headache. They will drink whatever you decide to serve so keep it limited to beer, wine, maybe a signature drink . They will appreciate the drinks you provide for them.
