Asian hair and makeup artist

J W, on July 20, 2020 at 7:17 AM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 14
I'm Asian so I have certain features such as monolids and straight black hair. I've been looking into getting a hair and makeup artist for my big day. The lady I have gone for is white and is highly rated and has won multiple awards. However, my maid of honour said it'll probably be best that I went to an Asian hair and makeup artist instead as she doesn't think a white person would be able to work with my features. I haven't gone for the trial yet due to COVID but I'm also wondering whether my maid of honour has a point. I've never had my hair and makeup done professionally so I'm not sure what to do. Does anyone else have any advice or has been in a similar situation to me?

An experienced artist will be knowledgeable on all kinds of hair textures, facial features, etc. Ask her if she has worked with other Asian brides and if she has any sample photos. I don't think you need to find an Asian HMUA to get what you're looking for.

Try the thumbtack app, you can see the artists body of work, rates and reviews. I had the same concerns being of African descent. I would just check out their website or social media page and see if they have experience working with people of all backgrounds (most professional MUA do) and when you find someone you think you would like to work with you can voice your concerns. I had my trial last week. She came to my home and washed her hands twice, wore a double mask, sanitized everything in front of me and used all disposable applicators without “double dipping”. I had a great experience. Just be vocal about what you want and what you expect and I’m sure a true professional will be more than accommodating.

Hello, are you not able to find an Asian makeup artist where you are? I agree with your MOH. I am Asian myself and it took me a very long time to find a makeup artist. Where I am, there's closed to none Asian makeup artist. The one I hired isn't Asian, but I have seen her done makeup and hair on a lot of Asian brides. Read a lot of reviews and see if they have done any makeup on Asians. We have different features, so it's going to be different. For example, I have Black hair, some of the styles I see look really good on blondes, but just doesn't look good on Asian Black hair.

As someone else previously said, a lot of makeup artists are trained to work with all different kinds of faces, skin colors, hair textures, etc. Can you look them up on Instagram or find photos elsewhere of the one you are looking at? She may have photos of an Asian she has done makeup for in the past. If she doesn’t, maybe just straight up ask her. My MUA has pictures on her instagram of people of all races, skin tones, etc. to show that she can work on many different kinds of faces.

Makeup artists are trained for different skin tones, just because the girl your hired is white, doesn’t mean she doesn’t know how to do makeup for your wedding. I would give her a chance, since she has won multiple awards!

If they are a good and knowledgeable makeup artist, then they can work on any skin tone, any facial features, eye shapes/sizes, any skin types and skin conditions.

    GIRL.
I'm having SO much trouble on finding an artist that has done "asian makeup"
I'm getting married in Kentucky so all the portfolios and websites I have seen are all non Asian artists - which I'm fine with- but none of their website gallery, instagram or Facebook has any previous asian brides for me to base my judgment on. I can see that their skills on non asian brides are great, but I have had makeup professionally done for other weddings of my white friends and the artists had no idea how to work on my monolids. They sigh or get really confused when my eyelids swallow the eyeshadow and eyeliner when my eyes are opened LOL. When I email and ask if they have previous experience in doing monolids, they don't reply back, so I've stopped asking, because I felt like maybe I was offending them and their skills..(?) And I just generally felt "rejected" So my game plan is just to keep looking at every single artist in the area and out of state that can travel and pick one that has at least one asian bride in their past posts. I'm certain they all have past experience with working with asian brides, because, not all brides can be white LOLLL. it's just a matter of finding someone that has a picture of it!I've also started saving TONS of bridal makeup of asian eyes so I can show when I have a trial. Good luck!!❤❤❤

I decided to have my sister do my makeup, but my hair was done by a professional who was not asian. I expressed my concerns with my hair which was mainly my thin straight hair can’t hold curls which is what I wanted. She delivered and my hair was gorgeous on my wedding day. I didn’t even do a trial cause I couldn’t.

I understand your concerns, which is why I always get my hair cut by Asians. Talk to the HMUA to see if they have any examples of previous asian brides they’ve worked on.

I completely get the concern, just because they're trained to work with different skin tones/types/races it doesn't mean that's where their experience lies. I've had concerns as well since I am Black, I'd be far more confident in someone who is knowledgeable on my skin tone & what shades would look best. Try this current MUA out and see if she has any experience with Asian brides. If she doesn't then you can continue to search for someone who you feel will do best for you.

A good makeup artist should have experience working with all different features. But you could also find them online and look at pictures and you can always do more than one trial with different artists til you find one you like

Hey! So I was able to find one company that had Asian brides in their Facebook (it was getting to a point whefe ANY pictures of previous Asian brides would have gotten our business LOL)
They are called Flawless Hair & Makeup, and they are based out in Cincinnati. Their website won't have any asian brides pics but you should be able to see some in their FB. I had no luck in Kentucky area, or they would have one picture from years and years ago.

    Good luck!

I suggest finding Asian makeup photos and asking you MUA to use those as inspiration. I used one of PonysMakeup look as inspiration. Your MUA should be able to tweak the makeup to your features. Plus a great MUA will ask you what you like or don’t like about the look and tweak it again for you. I’m Asian and my MUA is white but she was able to create a beautiful look for me.
