Is it common courtesy for me as the groomsman to stay at hotel with the rest of the groomsman and groom or can I just go home?

You can do whatever you want. If you plan on partying hard I would suggest staying over at the hotel

Absolutely your choice (unless the bride and groom are paying for your room, then you should probably stay)

It's your prerogative. If the groom wants everyone to stay at the hotel, the groom pays. Even then, if you would prefer a quiet night of good sleep at home, that is your right.
