Are sparkler send offs too overdone?

Joy, on July 28, 2014 at 12:58 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 19

I absolutely adore the way they look in photos, and we're already having an outdoor wedding, but so many people do it. Should I go ahead and do it, or are all the long-exposure sparkler shots becoming too cliche?

I've only seen it done once, myself. But check to make sure you venue allows it.

I am doing it. I don't care about "trends" because there have been so many weddings everything wedding related is/has been/or will be a trend. I say do it!

It's a fad, but it's a pretty cool one. If we were going to have a send-off in the dark I would totally try for it!

It does seem like everyone is doing it but from the weddings I've been to so far...no one has done it Smiley smile so it'll be a first in my group!

With social media, a lot of things seem overdone just because we keep seeing the same pins over and over again.

We like it, so we're doing it.

Don't worry so much about fads. Do what YOU want. It is your day afterall Smiley smile

I love the idea. I decided to have cake sparkler toppers, and shortly after decided to do sparklers at the reception for fun. We won't be "sent off" because we'll already be at our honeymoon location, but it adds for fun photo ops!

It might be overdone, but who really cares? If you like it, I say do it! Most guests haven't been to weddings that had sparkler sendoffs.

Edit: I agree with Erica to check with your venue first!

First check with your venue. Second, check to make sure the space leaving is wide enough for guests to stand far enough apart or make sure the coordinator lines the guests with enough space. I was speaking with my photographer and he has had issues at times with this. If the guests are not far enough apart it can make it difficult for the photographer to get certain pictures and not get burned in the process. Drunk people in close proximity waving lit objects is always fun.

I think it feels like it overdone because so many people on here talk about using them. Most guests probably won't even realize they're a fad. I've only been to one wedding that used sparklers to put it into perspective.

Just like was said above, it may be overdone, but I would bet very good money that many, if not ALL of your guests have not seen it done before...the reason you (and all of us) are thinking it may be overdone or cliche is because we are all up to our ears seeing it in photos and blogs because we are looking for inspiration.

Personally, I am not even worrying about a send off, FH and I want to be among the last standing at our reception....there's no leaving early for us!

They are beautiful BUT the one time I was at one my bridesmaid dress got a huge hole cinged in the front from a spark I didn't see hit me! I also read an article that Blake Lively's wedding gown had the same thing happen! For me, it's totally not worth it.

Tip about the sendoff the Maltese just reminded me about: fake your send off! lol seriously. my photographer told me that especially for sparkler sendoffs youll need to fake it to insure that enough people are there. she said a lot of light is needed and if you dont have enough people there to hold enough sparklers the pictures might not come out like you had hoped.

so think of it more of a photo op rather than a send off. bc as soon as i make my way down that sparkler line my butt is heading right back to the reception!

The only reason so many things seem "overdone" to us is because we are planning weddings.

Unless your guests go to a ton of weddings, they wont know if things are "overdone" or not. Do what you want and what you like. Who cares if every other bride is doing it too!

If you do a fake send off photo, I would get the most sober people around. Those things burn super hot and as was mentioned, holes in your gown or a guests clothing won't be fun. A drunk guest flinging one around would be even worse.

I personally don't think anything is "overdone". If something is done frequently (photobooth, mashed potato bar, ect) it's because they are cool and people like them. A lot of people do the sparkler send off because they make for beautiful photos so if you want to do it go for it!

I see it pretty often, but it's fun and makes great pictures, so go for it! Way better than bubbles, I'm not a bubbles fan.
