Are roses more expensive than orchids? Paging centerpiece

Jennifer, on February 15, 2017 at 8:28 PM Posted in Planning 0 24

Just checked my email and got the proposal for our flowers. Roses and hydrangeas 10 tall centerpieces 6 bm/gm, my bouquet, cake table and sweetheart table and our mothers pieces $3000+

My mom used same vendor with orchids and it was $2000 3 years ago (maybe vendor prices increased)

Moh used hydrangeas and orchids with double the amount of flowers 4 years ago and it was >$3000.

I will probably go to more vendors now to check pricing. I was definitely not expecting to spend this much on flowers. My heart fell to my booty when I read that price! Is it the roses making the huge difference? Is anyone else using these flowers?

According to my florist, roses are one of the cheapest flowers and orchids are more expensive. She suggested roses and eucalyptus for me to save money. It may be different in different parts of the country though.

ETA: I'm paying $3,500 for flowers. Mine are nowhere near as extravagant as yours.

Did your mom or MOH get the exact amount of items and style that you asked for?

Rental vases and amount of flowers per item make a huge difference

Orchids are pretty expensive as they require extra care. Roses are one of the cheaper options but flowers in general are pricey. Maybe consider what is in season at the time of your wedding & switch some around. Also, get quotes from multiple florists. ETA - clarity

Mom got slightly less but her price is including ceremony isle cylinder with flowers. My quote doesn't even include ceremony

Moh had twice as many tables. 20 tables, 10 bms/gm, fathers and grandfathers and grandmothers, about 6 large floral pieces in ceremony and reception tables

I wanted to use orchids as well but my florists say they are one of the most expensive flowers. You should shop around. I have 4bm/4gm and 24 tables at $1500.

Wow that's a great price! That's what I thought! Orchids should be more expensive so I can't understand my quote

Seasonality makes a difference, and prices go up over the years. Orchids are definitely more expensive than roses.

Inflation happened. Nothing is as cheap as it was 3-4 years ago, also if the centerpieces are more complicated they will cost more because of labor. And you never know if their overhead has changed, their rent may have gone up, employees could have gotten raises, there could be more employees...etc. The list goes on.

Flowers ended up being way more expensive than I thought, too. I figured roses would be very expensive but my florist said they were pretty reasonable compared to some others. Also just a side note- my sister had hydrangeas for her wedding and they wilted so much so fast!! Make sure you check with your florist about how long she can make them last and if she's worked with them before

I had gotten a hydrangea plant for Mother's Day and it did wilt fast. It needed constant water but I'm not a fan of many October season flowers. I originally wanted peonies but now I can't even imagine how much those would cost

Hydrangea can be kind of finicky so that could be part of the expense. And if your wedding is out of hydrangea season that can really make prices jump up.

Seasonal flowers are the best if you are in a budget, but if you can spare somewhat, here's an awesome pro I've worked with before and she won't cost you an arm and a leg. Ceci from Elite's Flowers in Hollywood, FL. I mixed a lot of greenery for my own wedding, with roses and garden roses, it also helps $.

@Future Mrs. Norman I feel you! I'm in Northern VA and everything is so damn expensive here Smiley sad

I'm doing centerpieces similar to your photo, but bit smaller in volume. My florist told me that it's really the season that dictates the flower prices.. Check around your area to see what quotes you can get. I agree that mixing tall and short centerpieces is a good idea if you're tight on flower budget. My mom's always told me that I have to splurge on flowers as they are what makes photos and videos on the big day (I'm brainwashed by her, and she is funding most of my wedding), so I'm really splurging on the flowers even if I have to cut costs elsewhere. If you REALLY want the flowers, maybe consider cutting some costs, like going with a less expensive dress or doing some DIY decor!

Just give the florist your budget and see what they come up with that fits that number.

I don't know which is more expensive, but I will say my flowers ended up being way more expensive than I thought they would be. I'm also pretty sure my flowers are going to be out of season though.

I would contact the florist and see if they can change to some smaller centerpieces (maybe half tall/half small) or decrease the size of any of your pieces. That should lower the quote. My florist sent us a quote that was higher than we anticipated so I just contacted them and asked if there were changes we could make that would lower the cost. She decreased the size/complexity of my centerpieces and bouquets and it significantly brought the price down.
