Are room blocks necessary?

Follow up: if we don't do a room block do you think we need to do STDs so people can book early?

A room block is a nice gesture, and your out of town guests will appreciate it. Out of over 20 out of state guests coming, only one couple is using our room block. Everyone else wanted to use their points to stay at other hotels for free.

We didn't do a room block and 95% of our guests are coming from out of town. We decided against it because the resort where we're having our wedding would do blocks but there was no discount that came with it. We had to reserve a set number of rooms and were on the hook financially if they didn't all get booked. We weren't willing to be at the mercy of people following through with their plans. It's a good thing too, because it turns out half of the folks that said they were going to stay at the resort opted for a less expensive hotel down the road. We just advised people to book way early before rates shot up.

Use the weddingwire room block service. they were able to get me blocks with great rates at hotels during busy tourist season from places that told me they couldnt offer anything when i just called straight up. i also got discount codes for our guests from 2 other hotels that couldnt offer traditional blocks.

they have a LOT more bargaining power than you might if you just called yourself.

For you, I don't think it's necessary, unless there's a big event going on, or you can get a good discount.

Our room block contract stated that if our guests booked a cheaper rate than the hotel's group rate (Priceline, Expedia, hotels.com, etc) they would still include the room in our room block as long as the guest contacted them directly to request to be added.

On mobile so I hope that made sense.

ETA - the answer to your question lol. Are they necessary, no. I think in your case (with the wedding being in CC) your guests will be fine with a few suggestions for hotels in the area on your wedding website. I'm sure that by now your OOT guests know that they will need to arrange lodging.

I would pick one hotel to do a transport from if you can.... and make other suggestions as needed.
