Are Resorts in Mexico Safe?

J, on January 25, 2019 at 2:29 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 19
Remember when there was that whole thing warning people not to go to resorts in Mexico because of poisoned alcohol and tourists were dying? This was like a year or two ago.

Anyways FH wants to go to Mexico because it’s cheaper than other Caribbean type resorts and I don’t really love the idea of Mexico in the first place but, as long as it’s considered safe, I’d definitely be open to discussing it.

So, just in general, would you say Mexican resorts are safe honeymoon options or are there safer places that you’d suggest?

I think Mexican tourist towns are just like any other tourist towns- the resorts are typically safe, but you should be cautious when traveling outside of them. Make sure to look at reviews from multiple sources before making any decisions.

I used to live in Ecuador and I’ve been to Mexico and Guatemala. Yes, there are plenty of safe resorts. All over the world, including America/Canada, there are safe parts and dangerous parts. I recommend you look at online reviews on TripAdvisor to see what previous guests had to say about specific resorts there.

We were just in Cancun, in November. We had a blast and felt safe. Also as far as alcohol went, we started ordering shots because we didn't feel like the drinks were strong enough. We learned our lesson one day lol. I think the safety of Mexico depends on your location and on how smart of a tourist you are. Dont wander alone and keep valuables in the safe.

However, if you don't really want to go to Mexico, aside from the safety thing, then don't go to Mexico. There are plenty of options in the Caribbean that are similar to Mexico prices, including the Dominican republic, and puerto Rico. Good luck!

Well. We are getting married at a resort in Mexico so I’d say they’re pretty safe.

I havent been but my fiance is weary with everything going on politically so we are going on a cruise to New England and Canada. My future sister in law and her husband stayed at a resort in Mexico in 2017 and they were fine. I probably wouldn't leave the resort though.

I was in the same boat as you, we really considered a resort but then decided to take a cruise where we still stop in Mexico for the day. We figured best of both worlds still all-inclusive but also get to see more than one place.

If you look at the travel advisories, Cancun (and much of the Caribbean/Gulf of Mexico side) are at the same travel advisory level as Jamaica, Barbados, The Bahamas, Dominican Republic, Turks & Caicos, etc. So basically, it’s no less safe than everywhere else. There are places in the US that are more dangerous than places in Cancun. It all just depends on how careful you are.

We are taking our honeymoon in Cancun. We’ll probably go on a few excursions, but if we do, we’ll be booking them through the resort and usign private drivers to take us everywhere. If we decided to venture out a bit and explore some local areas, we’re just going to be extra careful.

There are people who take advantage of tourists in every country in the world. Just be aware of your surroundings. But I’m not worried at all about Cancun.

We were in Jamaica last year when they had a super high travel advisory. We stayed on the resort and the one time we did go out, we stayed with our private driver and we were fine. As other commenters have said, just do your research. Tripadvisor is great for looking up things like this.

It’s safe. We’re taking my daughter to Mexico this summer. Lots of people take family vacations there. I’ve went off resort when I’ve been there before and felt safe. You’ll be in a resort city, they have Walmarts and malls and everything lol.

So I think I need to clear something up. I’m asking if the resort themselves are safe. There was a huge advisory of people dying literally at the resorts because the alcohol was tainted or something. Nothing to do with the nearby towns. It was the resorts themselves that weren’t safe

My cousin is a wedding planner in Cancun for years and she hasnt had any issues. Not only in her resort but other resorts around her. Everything is pretty safe. If it was that bad they would've closed until things got better. Hopefully you feel better about going, but you should pick a place where both of you will enjoySmiley laugh

The rule and saying in our family has always been that if you go out of country to a touristy place then you need to stay in the touristy places. That's why missing people have been popping up dead in Cancun. I mean I would say the resorts are probably safe.

I am going to Mexico for my HM. I am more concerned about explosive diarrhea than I am getting murdered. Call me strange but I would rather be dead than humiliated. lol

Haha montazuma’s revenge. Yeah no I’m not talking about murder. There was a whole travel advisory about Mexican resorts and the alcohol being served in the resorts killing people.

It's as safe as you make it, I am honeymooning to Cancun a very famous tourist spot and I don't plan on taking rides from random people or going on these "special tours"; but then again I am from Los Angeles and I wouldn't do the same here. Every location has its good and bad it's up to you visiting it how adventurous you want to be. We have everything booked including activities. When we booked our airport pick up and drop off the confirmation email had instructions for arrival they said stuff like:

Go through immigration, then baggage claim and then finally customs then it says to walk all the way out of the terminal and to ignore all the people in between trying to get your business, etc. once you walk out of the terminal there will be someone with a sign with your name and there will always be on of their representative on site at the airport to get your car. I mean just plan it out smart and you should be good, all of our activities have specified pickups and drop offs at our hotel so there is no question about it. Also FH and I have talked about staying together and not separating during our trip at all.

Go for it, picking the Caribbean doesn't guarantee safety. I am from Puerto Rico and have been told when staying there to not leave any of your pricey belongings in your arm out in the open, I have been told to take my luggage with me if I go to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. Be cautious and be safe, you will be good.

Thank you! That’s all really good advice and great idea about not splitting up! We’ll definitely use all of this advice no matter where we go!

But it’s actually not so much the area I’m concerned about (I know any of these areas maintain a certain degree of risk). It’s the resorts themselves that I’m concerned about. There was an issue with tourists getting sick & dying from the alcohol provided by the resorts which is what I’m trying to find out if it’s still an issue or not. Lol.

Maybe you can get those strips or nail polish that indicate whether your drinks have anything in them and have peace of mind. I mean whatever works right, I know that once I have put my drink down and have looked away that drink no longer is mine. Maybe make your own drinks before leaving your room with your own alcohol. I just read the article about the Iberostar resort in Cancun and they literally bought alcohol off the black market, thats crazy considering they're a 5 star resort.

    https://www.undercovercolors.com/

thats the link for the site that sells stuff that you can use to determine if your drink is safe, might help.
