Are Name Change Services Worth the Money?

FutureMrs.G, on March 2, 2016 at 8:34 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 4

I know I still have time to think about this, but I've started looking into possibly using a name change service to help guide me through the process after the wedding. I've gotten mixed answers from friends about how easy/difficult the process is here in IL. It took one bride 2 weeks, but she's super organized and has a lot of spare time. Another bride took 3 months to finish the process due to gathering all the forms, filling them out, and finally getting to the proper offices to file them. I certainly don't want it to take months to complete and I'm hoping a service like MissNowMrs. will help out - especially because I have things like student loans, a home in my name, a passport, credit cards, several bank accounts, 2 vehicles, etc. to deal with. Has anyone used a service like this? Which one did you use and would you recommend it? Do you think it was worth paying for this? (I think MissNowMrs. is only like $30 which is not a big deal if it saves me a ton of time!)

So ridiculously easy, and I'm from IL. No clue how it could possibly take 3 months.

Step one- get your marriage certificate from the county. This can take some time, pay for expedited shipping ($10).

Step 2- SS Office. Bring marriage certificate, birth, and drivers. I don't think they even technically need birth. There's usually their own line for this and I and my friends have been in and out in 15 minutes.

Step 3- wait for them to mail it to you. You'll receive a piece of paper day of and I've heard mixed reviews of you can take that. Wait the week, bring new SSC, old drivers lisence, and marriage certificate to the DMV. Done.

Paging a service will NOT speed it up if you are unable to get your docs together. It will in fact take longer since you're adding a middle man. Start with SSC, drivers license and the rest are pretty damn easy. Think about everyone who gets married- it's not that hard.

No. They are not. It is not hard and the services don't do anything FOR you. You still have to haul yourself to SSA and DMV.
