Are menus necessary?

Kari, on January 23, 2020 at 1:37 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 1 10

We're having a plated dinner and our guests will choose their choice option as part of their RSVP, so we will have meal orders to our caterer ahead of time. We are sourcing local, organic, farm-to-table food and being very intentional about using local, seasonal, fresh ingredients on our menu.

We are having six hors doeuvres passed during cocktail hour, followed by a plated salad and plated meal (guest have a pork, chicken, or vegan option), and two individual desserts.

Do you think printed menus are necessary? We really want to highlight our food selections but don't want the expense of printing a menu for each guest. Do you think we can do one menu per table? If so, where would we put it. Would it be weird to have a table number printed on one side and a menu on the reverse side? If so, any recommendations as to how/where to make something like that?

I would say that doing it on your table number card will be the cheapest option. I’m sure Etsy has a template for that and you could do them yourself and have them printed at Staples or someplace like that.

I think the table number/menu option is a good one. Alternatively you could do a really cool menu board on an easel for everyone to see (kind of like how people do for cocktail menu).

I agree with menu board. I've seen it done before I plan to do that as well.

I like the menu board idea. But really, a menu isn’t necessary.

A menu is definitely not necessary. I like the idea of doing one per table.

I agree with the PP. Go with a menu board so guests know what is offered. Even though they have already made their selection on their RSVP, some may forget what they chose the day of the wedding.

I can't think of a way to make a menu board look elegant and not obnoxious (anything big enough to be viewed anywhere in our venue would overtake the rest of the aesthetic) plus we will have escort cards with guests food selections on them because our venue requires them, so guests "forgetting" what they ordered won't be an issue. I supposed we could just print one menu near where the escort cards go.

I don't think it's necessary. I also had to have the menu selection on the back of the place card for the venue, so the likelihood of people forgetting was slim, like you said. If you really, really want a menu somewhere then, I think it's fine to just have one per table.

To me, anytime you're serving food, people like to know what is being served. You can put a single menu card in the middle of the table.
