Are jeans ever acceptable?

Lindsay, on April 20, 2016 at 7:37 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 82

My fiance wants to wear jeans to my friends wedding. They are dark jeans and he plans to wear either a button up or polo shirt and khaki colored blazer. It's not nearly a black tie wedding nor is it a backyard BBQ. I feel like jeans and weddings don't mix, he's a business professional and his argument is this style is the new business casual and therefore should be wedding appropriate. What are your thoughts?

I think no. Tell him to throw on a pair of khakis.

I would be mortified if someone came to my wedding in jeans.... The only time I think it's okay is if it says so on the invitation (like the barn wedding I went to, it was on the family farm that was still up and running and they literally got married in between chores)

I think jeans are too casual. Slacks or khakis for sure.

I have to agree with PPs. No to jeans, IMO.

No jeans unless it's stated somewhere that jeans are allowed.

No. Every once in a while I'll see a pair at a wedding, but it's rare. And it kinda makes me think the person didn't want to come.

My gut says no jeans...but would the couple be OK with it? How is he planning on dressing them up? While I shudder at the thought of jeans for a wedding, some couples really don't have a problem with it.

    No.

Also, "new" business casual? Jeans are still casual. Just casual.

No. If he's a "business professional" that means he owns nicer clothes. I love Celia's point about it looking like they don't want to come. It's one day, suck it up and look like you care.

I agree with other posters. No jeans. I'm hoping people don't wear jeans to mine.

Haha, I will have to show him this forum if he wants to argue otherwise. Thanks for confirming my thoughts and opinion as well!

No to the jeans. If it is a barn wedding and that is what the groom is wearing then that's fine. We went to a nicer wedding 6 years ago and there were 2 people wearing jeans. We still talk about it.

ETA: FH said if anyone shows up to our wedding in jeans, he's kicking them out.

Nope. I cringe every time I see someone at a wedding in jeans.

I started no. But I'm in the camp if - 'any excuse to put on something nice' and dress for the occasion.

My fh family was asking what kind of attire is OK and I said summer casual, like khakis or slacks and a nice shirt.. my fh and his guys are forgoing the tux or suit and just wearing grey slacks and a white button down, but I don't think jeans are acceptable. My brother was recently in a wedding and the groom and his men wore dark jeans and plaid shirts with vests. It looked awful!
