Are doughnut walls played out?

Ariel, on May 11, 2021 at 7:08 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 20
I love doughnuts. They’re s true passion of mine. I know doughnut walls became trendy a few years ago. Is it lame to have a doughnut wall at our reception ? I know a lot of you will say “it’s your day, so do what you want”. However I’d love to know your objective opinions. Is it an old trend that’s out of style now? Is it better to just have doughnuts nicely arranged on a nice serving platter? Is a doughnut wall COVID friendly? What are you thoughts! Thanks!

A doughnut wall doesn’t seem COVID friendly to me because you could be touching two donuts at once.
I don’t think it’s overplayed at all though.

My friend had one at hers! it looked cute! also i love doughnuts so as a guest i would totally want one. i don't think it's overplayed actually, i don't see them that often enough, personally. i also would not mind because again, i LOVE them haha.

i think they can be covid friendly if you package each individually and then hang them on the wall.

I don't think its overplayed at all, I only went to one wedding who had it and thought it was cute! I'll be having donuts at my wedding too but they won't be on a wall - it'll be a donut sundae bar! Can't go wrong with donuts and ice cream! Not sure if its COVID friendly, maybe you want to provide those plastic disposable gloves or something so people can grab without using their hands directly.

Would you ever say that cake is overplayed? Probably not, and yet it has been around for a long long time. Also, I love donuts and I'd be excited to see them at a wedding!

I actually haven't been to a wedding with a donut wall! I think it would be more COVID-friendly than platters since they'll only be stacked 1-2 per peg (vs. a dozen or more in a stack) - easier to see the different flavors and pinpoint which one you want. You could provide tongs or disposable gloves or even the little sheets of waxy paper like pastry shops use to grab items from display cases!

It’s basically a board or wall with pegs that allow you to hang the doughnuts. Are doughnut walls played out? 1

Thanks for all the comments, I think I just needed some reassurance. If we go forward with it we will definitely need to have tongs or other Covid friendly ways of grabbing the donuts.

Thank you. I am surprised they stay fresh. But if you clear them within 15-20 minutes of uncovering, they are fast serve.
Around here they are usually in little glass cabinets, open
the door. Like pastries. Thank you!

Doesn’t seem covid friendly (never seemed sanitary to me).

I love donuts too and that’s why I’ll be doing a donut 🍩 wall for my reception. I’m happy to hear that the others would be excited to see one as a wedding guest. I was also trying to figure out how to make it little more covid friendly. I think putting the donuts into cute small bags and then hanging them on the sticks is probably the best idea. That way they’re not exposed.

I love donuts, but if by overplayed you mean it's done a lot...I would say yes, I've seen quite a few people do this at their weddings lately. My FH's sister offered a pretzel as a favor to go and she opted to wrap them individually vs. putting them somewhere easy to grab so that people weren't touching multiple pretzels. With covid, that'll probably be important to people. So I'm wondering, is your venue offering the option for a donut wall? If so, maybe you could talk to them about having an attendant at the wall getting the donuts for the guests so it's only one person handling the food vs. a bunch of people? You'd still get to have the wall but not everyone is touching it that way. Might be something they can do!

I think they look cute but the donuts are ALWAYS dry. So i would serve them however you need to to make sure they are fresh and not crusty.

I don’t think doughnut walls are overplayed at all. I also love doughnuts and we are incorporating an apple code doughnut wall at our fall wedding.

My mom and I are huge germaphobes so we are ordering those papers you use at grocery stores to grab baked goods. I don’t know what they’re called!

I think this is a great idea! I'd eat a donut off a wall.

I love donuts! Yet, there’s just something about donut walls that always make me cringe 😬 (even pre-covid) …. In addition, they’re so overly used. When things like that get played out, it’s better to think of an alternative idea that would be just as fun but isn’t such a fad. For example, something just popped into my head was the idea of donut-hole skewers. Maybe they can be wrapped in clear cellophane wrappers. I don’t know if that idea exists, but at least it’s not seen everywhere. Or what about just having cute individually boxed donuts since the wall itself is unnecessary.

Not covid friendly and the walls are way over done. They are the new cupcake tower trend. Do nice platters and make your life a lot simpler!

My fiancé made me a donut board and it’s beautiful. But we are also serving some on trays as the cake donuts from our local bakery don’t have very distinct centers. I LOVE donuts and this is something all my friends and family know about me. The last time my parents visited we took them to the bakery to try it and my mom texted me the other day saying she couldn’t wait for the wedding to have another donut! So whether it’s “in” or not, I’m going for it!

Oh as for COVID, I don’t think it’s any different from any other self-serve desert table. Depending on how things are by our date I am planning on just asking guests to wear masks when moving about or approaching any food table.
